Sonic Blast Game Gear Tips by William Walker Basics Press down while running right or left, and you will go right or left in a ball, smashing enemies. Press down and one or two (jump buttons), and your character will rev up. When you let go of the down button, he will shoot forward, smashing enemies. Press the jump button two times and Sonic will jump extra high. If Knuckles presses the jump button two times, he will jump and then go forward, smashing enemies and, if you do the same thing next to a wall, Knuckles can climb the wall to reach higher levels. Press up to go up the wall and down to go down it. You can play as either Sonic or Knuckles. To choose one, on the last screen before you start press left or right, and the character in the window is the one that will be selected when you press start. Some Super Moves can only be done by one character, as described above. You can enter Special Stage whenever you touch a big ring. In Special Stage, you must collect as many rings as possible. Boosters, springs and bumpers can influence Sonic's movement. The controls are the same as in a regular game, 1 and 2 are jump, and left and right allow you to move left and right. If you collect 50 rings, you get whatever the prize is at the end of the stage. On stages that are mostly green, you get a 1-Up at the end if you got 50 rings. You get a chaos emerald at the end of purple stages. You also get 100 points for each ring that you have at the end of a purple stage, even if you don't get the emerald. After Special Stage, you start at the beginning of the Act, or at the last continue box that you hit. Your character will get a time bonus if he finishes the level quickly, and 100 points for each ring he is holding at the end of the level. Whenever your character is hit, he loses 10 rings. Five of these rings will fly into the air, and you can get them back by grabbing them before they disappear. You lose a life if you are hit with zero rings. When you jump on a TV monitor, it will reveal an icon that is usually good for you. Super Rings give 10 rings, speed shoes let you run fast, invincibility makes you invulnerable to enemies for 30 seconds, bonus life TVS are worth an extra life, and Robotnik TVS are worth nothing. By the way, sometimes when the flag comes down at the end of the stage, it will give you a secret power-up. Walkthrough Green Hill Zone — Act 1 Note; look for rings above trees. Fairly simple. Just go to the far right. Spin dash through 360 degree loops from a distance or you will not get through. Jump on boxes with arrows on them to save your place, and watch out for the monkeys that drop coconuts from trees and the badnicks that shoot up from beneath bridges. When you drop into the water, spin dash through a breakable wall at the right, to get to a big ring (green stage). Now jump out of the water and keep going right to the exit. By the way, please take the lower path if you want to get to the pool of water. Green Hill Zone — Act 2 Go to the far right and into a pipe. Shoot through the pipe and if you're Knuckles, climb the wall and at the top grab a 1-Up TV. Either way, now go left and when you are about to go down an incline, jump up and to the left and grab some rings in a secret area after spin dashing through a wall. Ignore the TV because it's a Robotnik TV. Drop out of the secret area and go left down a corridor. Jump on the continue box and go right to a fork in your path. Jump right onto a platform and go to the far right. You will eventually reach a big ring (purple stage). Now go down the lower path. At the far right go down a corridor and go into the pipe and go right through the underwater area. Shoot through several pipes pressing no buttons and when you stop, jump up to a platform and go right to the goal. Green Hill Zone — Act 3 Note; some blue buttons are red buttons for knuckles. Start out by going to the far right. Hurry across the collapsing bridge, though falling is not fatal. If you fall, just go to the far right. If you don't fall then you'll reach a cliff. Jump right and hit a blue button under an overhang on the wall. Use Sonic's Boost blast jump or glide for this target. If you hit it, drop down and go to the far left. The blue button opens a barrier, and you can go into an area with lots of rings. Go to the far right to meet the boss. When the boomerang on Robotnik's ship spins, it is about to fire. To avoid it, jump and hit Robotnik's head from above for a hit. Robotnik will then shoot another boomerang. Avoid it in the same manner as the first time. Robotnik will then fly across the screen and repeat the cycle. Six hits will defeat him. Yellow Desert Zone — Act 1 First go right. Be sure to jump up on all of the palm trees, because there are usually rings above them. Bounce on a spring to get over a cliff, then keep going to the far right and there drop down a long corridor. From there go right and drop into the pipe (after collecting the rings). The pipe will drop you in a quicksand bog. You die if you stay in too long, so jump out quickly. From the nearby platform, jump up on top of the wall at the left using a boost blast jump for Sonic or wall climb for Knuckles. Go right to a big ring (green stage). After bonus stage, replay the level, this time jumping over both pipes and continuing to the far right to the exit. Yellow Desert Zone — Act 2 >From the start, go to the far right. There's a wall of spikes at the top and some of the spikes fall down, making the upper route dangerous. The lower route has spiked pits, making it dangerous too. After going to the far right (if you took the lower path you must climb up), drop down a long corridor. From here, go to the far right, grabbing any rings and the continue marker. There are parts of ground that slide you around, so be careful of the spiked pits. By the way, the upper routes are dead ends and usually do not do much good, because they have many spikes in them. If you continue along the sand slide to the far right, you should drop down a corridor and go left to sinkhole wall. In sinkhole wall, you'll be shot from sinkhole to sinkhole out of control. Run inside the wall and when you stop moving, go right and you will shoot around again. The second time that you stop moving, jump up and diagonally to the right. You should go to a sinkhole diagonally from you and eventually get to a big ring (purple stage). After leaving the stage, replay the level from the continue box, and when you stop the second time in sinkhole wall, run left and one sinkhole will shoot you to the goal. Yellow Desert Zone — Act 3 Just go down, down, down. Try to get as many rings as possible, and touch blue buttons to open barriers to reach secret ring-filled areas. At the very bottom go left to the Boss. Robotnik's contraption will appear from one side of the screen, and you should hit its top. After two hits Robotnik will retreat back. Watch out because he's about to come quickly from the same direction, holding a red spear that your character can only avoid by jumping and hitting the top again as the contraption passes. He's not too easy, but eight good spankings should keep him at bay. Red Volcano Zone — Act 1 First go right down two inclines and over three lava pits. (They hit your character if you fall in.) Now you will see an object that moves and when you jump on the red portion you bounce up. Get the nearby shield up there and some rings, and then you can even go along the higher route to the right, or drop down and go right on the lower route. Either way go to the far right and if you take the lower route jump on the spring on the lava pit to make it move across. (Jump several times to get all the way across.) Continue right over a few more lava pits to the giant lava fall. Platforms will appear and disappear so jump time your jumps carefully to get across. You may fall into the lava, which is just a hit, so keep going right. At the far right is the exit. (If you're Knuckles, get up high and glide across.) Red Volcano Zone — Act 2 First go right and you will see a smoker. (Smokers shoot jets of air that are dangerous to you.) Jump over the smoker, onto a spring over a lava pit. Important: there is a badnick over the lava pit that has a flame around him, and he can knock you off the spring. Jump on him when his flame is at the bottom, then bounce back onto the spring. If you are hit, don't worry. Jump over a smoker and you will see a spring. Jump up and hit the sol (the badnicks that have flames around them I will call sols) with a boost blast jump. Up there you can go left for a shield. The upper path is dangerous, so drop back down and continue right over another smoker. While crossing the pit via the spring be very careful of the sol (the second sol is not dangerous because he's too high to hurt you). Then continue right and if you are interested in getting some goodies, bounce on the spring to a ledge on the right and go right to find a 1-Up, guarded by smokers. Then drop down and jump right over a lava pit. Drop down a corridor at right; then go left and hit a continue box. Keep going left and down a slope. At the bottom of the slope, jump left onto another slope, and from the top of that slope boost blast jump right and bounce on top of the sol to reach a ledge with a big ring (purple stage). This is very difficult for Sonic, and takes lots of practice. If you're Knuckles, glide right and bounce on the sol to get to the ring; this is easier. After Special Stage, drop down between the two slopes and go right to the spin dash machine. Spin dash on it to make it move up, and then go right and down. Jump up and left from where you land and run through the wall two times to collect some rings. Then go back down and left over a pit that you cross using a spring with no sols. Then use a spin dash machine to go up and keep going left, then down. Then go to the far right, using springs to get over some lava pits, to the goal. Be careful of the smokers too; use the same caution with the sols while crossing lava pits. Red Volcano Zone — Act 3 You'll start near a fork in your path. If you go up to the very top, you can touch a blue button that opens a passageway to some rings.) Go right, down, right, up to the very top (via a spin dash machine), up again on platforms, left, up (spin dash machine), left to a spin dash machine. Ride up and jump right to a platform. Boost blast jump (Sonic) or climb the wall a little bit and then do a glide attack (Knuckles). This is difficult for Knuckles. From here go up, then left, then up (boost blast jump or wall climb). Then go a little bit to your right and jump on the strange looking tiny platform to face the boss. Robotnik will bounce up onto the screen. He will try to bounce under you, so keep moving left or right. When he bounces up, hit him and then watch out for the large rock he will shoot at you on a chain. Avoid it by bouncing back to the far right or left side of the screen. Then Robotnik will lower down and bounce up again, repeating the cycle. Be sure to hit the top of Robotnik's contraption, or else it won't be a hit, and you don't want to get stuck under Robotnik. He's a tough cookie, and you should not always go for a hit. The middle of the screen is a safe spot for you, since he can never bounce up there. Position is very important. Eight hits and he'll run for his life. Blue Marine Zone — Act 1 Note: For the remainder of the game the zones are very complex and confusing. If you get stuck, you might not be able to follow the tips. Try to get back on course if this happens. Also, in Blue Marine Zone a countdown will start when your character's air is running out. When it hits zero, you die. Replenish your air by going into pipes, jumping into air bubbles or surfacing. Start out by going right over two gaps and a collapsing bridge. Spin dash through a breakable wall. At the far right is a bonus life. After getting it, drop down into a gap and get into an area where there are pipes on either side of you. (If you fell down earlier, go right. If you drop down a later gap, go left via a strong current). By the way there should be a stream of bubbles between the two pipes. Go into the left pipe. After coming out and regaining control go up and not into another pipe. Use boost blast jump or wall climb to reach a ledge with two pipes. One has a strong current coming out. Do not jump or else the current will push you away from the area. Go into the lower pipe. After shooting out to the right, regain control quickly and go left. Then quickly go up, jumping from platform to platform. You can not go back into the pipe so go quickly. If you run out of air and drown, don't worry: it is very difficult and takes practice. Sonic's boost blast is helpful, so Knuckles has a tougher time. At the top, you can do two things. Either go right to the goal or go left onto a platform with a continue box, and then keep going left over some platforms. At the far left jump on the blue object and the whole level will drain! Go back down and at the very bottom go right, then up to a big ring(green stage). A current used to surround this ring. Climb the wall if you're Knuckles; jump up on the tiny platforms using the Boost Blast if you're Sonic. Then hit the goal from the continue box. One last thing: the level will be flooded again after special stage. Blue Marine Zone — Act 2 This is very complex. First go right over the collapsing bridge, but be careful. There's a spring on the other side that could knock you into the gap. Jump over it. Go across another collapsing bridge and hit the super ring and then run through the wall. Drop down and go into the pipe. The two upper pipes will take you to a room with six rings in it. After collecting this bonus, go into the lowest pipe and a current will push you underneath the first collapsing bridge. Go right after collecting some air bubbles from the spout of bubbles near where you landed. At the right go down and then left, jumping over the gap. Then drop down and go right, then down again after the bridge collapses. Watch out for the crab when you land. When you see a collapsing bridge with four rings above it, collapse it and jump into the newly made gap. When you are in an open space, immediately boost blast jump (Sonic) or glide (Knuckles) right to avoid the current underneath. If you touch the current you'll be swept left and have to use the pipe to get back up. If you're running out of air by now, no problem. Just go right and jump up into the pipe. At the end of the pipe, you will be carried down to the bottom by a current. Now go up on some platforms, grabbing a continue box on the first one and some air bubbles from a spout on the second one. Then jump up on a tiny platform, and up again. Then go right. This can get very confusing, so don't be upset if you get lost. If you go right before jumping onto the tiny platform you will see a big ring (purple stage) blocked by a barrier. Anyway, jump over a gap then continue right through some walls. If you hit the spring, you will bounce up into the higher pipe. Right above where you leave this pipe is the blue button that allows you to get the big ring. Go back and collect it. Ignore the pipe above the blue button. After special stage, retrace your steps from the continue box. This time avoid the spring and go into the lower pipe. When your character is shot out, let him shoot into another pipe, then go into a third pipe. After the current out of the third pipe stops, let yourself go down, but don't go next to the right wall because there's a badnick underneath it. Then go left and into a pipe. After being shot into a continue box, go right and up some steps. At the edge go to the platform above and spin dash left through a breakable wall. Continue left and jump up to a platform above. (Boost blast jump or wall climb; the jump is tough for Sonic). But first you should drop into the gap, and before jumping out via the spring, hit the blue button at the right. This will partly drain the level. At the platform above, go right (over a gap) and up, collecting some air bubbles. This will be at the water's surface if you hit the blue button. The pipe above is impossible to reach for Knuckles, but it is not necessary to reach it. Instead jump up to the left and continue left and up on some platforms. Then go right into a pipe. When you shoot out, regain control and get the super ring above where you were shot out. Then go left and into another pipe. When you shoot out, avoid being shot into another pipe by jumping. Jump up onto the ledge above the pipe. Then continue right to the goal. Blue Marine — Act 3 Go right and deliberately drop down after the first bridge collapses. Go left and into a pipe, which will drop you onto a collapsing bridge. Drop down two collapsing bridges and a current will push you right. Continue right to the boss. When Robotnik's submarine ship stops moving, hit its head where Robotnik is sitting. Robotnik will shoot an arrow across the screen and you must duck to avoid it after hitting him. (Hit him quickly.) The second time Robotnik appears he will do the same thing. The third and fourth times he will just continue across the screen without stopping or shooting an arrow. If you start running out of air, do not hit Robotnik and his arrow will go down. When it hits the ground an air bubble will go up from that spot. Jump on it for air. Seven hits and Robotnik will run. Silver Castle Zone — Act 1 Another confusing one. When the platform that you dropped onto at the start stops moving, jump right and go right under a object that's center is red, on a platform above. Keep going right and drop down the first gap you come to. Then go right and step on the transmitter object with a red center, to warp to a new part of the level. From here go left, ignoring the transmitters and avoiding the badnicks. Jump up a step, with a spring at the base of the step. Keep going to the far left, over a large spiked pit, ignoring all the platforms above. When you come to a fork in your path, take the lower left route. Keep going left, then down, after collecting the shield on the ledge at the left. At the bottom, go right as fast as possible because a spiked wall will chase you. Difficult, but possible. At the far right, walk onto a transmitter and then go to the far right using the platform to get over the spiked pit to the goal. Silver Castle Zone — Act 2 First go right, avoiding the badnicks and remembering that you start with zero rings. Spin dash through three walls, but slow down very quickly to avoid the electric beams in front of you. Run by the beams when they are off. Continue right and jump over the gap. If you fall into the gap, you are unfortunately on your own. I'm very sorry about this. At the other side of the gap, continue right, getting the super ring between two yellow panels on the floor; they do not hurt you. Go right jumping over a spiked pit, and spin dash through a breakable wall. Slow down quickly, jump into the gap hugging the right wall, and holding the right button down, and you should land on the edge of a collapsing bridge. Quickly go right across the collapsing bridge, and then go right. Jump up to a platform above, then go right onto a transmitter. From the transmitter, jump right across a spiked pit with a badnick bouncing up and down in the center. Continue right to another transmitter. From the new area go left across a spiked pit. (Because of the spikes above it, it is almost impossible to boost blast jump or glide across without taking damage. At the other side continue left until you see a big ring in front of a transmitter. Go to a very difficult purple stage and then retrace your steps exactly from the beginning of the level. Remember that if you fall into the gaps you are on your own. At the spot where the big ring was, go on to the transmitter. You will appear in the air to the left of a spiked wall. Go to the far left quickly, avoiding the badnicks and the spiked wall, which will chase you. At the far left, drop down and then go right to the goal. Silver Castle Zone — Act 3 Fairly simple. Just grab the rings to the left then jump onto the platform above and walk on the transmitter on that platform to go to the boss room. At the far left there is nothing to accomplish. First of all, instead of moving left to right on the large wheel that your character is standing on, the wheel will turn and move the platform above you in the opposite direction that you are going. (So if you run left, the platform will go right, and vice versa.) The screen will scroll up to reveal Robotnik activating either the left side of his ship or the right side. When activated that side of his ship becomes a column with a blue spark on top, and a blue beam drops down from that side of his ship. Try to get the platform under the activated side, so that the electrical beam will bounce back up instead and hit Robotnik. If the platform is not underneath it, the beam will go down and then toward you quickly, so you must jump over it. This is difficult because the conveyor belt above with the platform on top of it, prevents you from jumping above it. After ten hits, the machine will self destruct. Be careful. Sometimes he will activate for a second; then activate the other side or the same side again to trick you. If you collected all five chaos emeralds, you will have to fight this boss after the other boss. You start with 99 rings, and cannot get anymore than that. When Robotnik starts moving back and forth on the top of the screen, dropping blue sparks two at a time, jump on the object in the center of the screen and Robotnik's face inside his ship will turn into an arrow pointing up for one second. Now jump on Robotnik's head, avoiding the long spikes on each side of his head. If hit, Robotnik will move to the center of the screen and fire 4 sparks, two on each side of the object in the center of the screen. They must be skillfully avoided by either jumping on the far left or right of the screen, or by getting between them. After about six hits the object in the center of the screen will move back and forth at half the speed of Robotnik, making it trickier, but the object still does the same thing when jumped on.
