Level 7

ARCTIC SEA
Sublevel 1

HELHEIM
Part 1
THE SIX STATUES

Every time you will open this Level the following Introduction Screen will be seen:
The Midgard Serpent is clearly a metaphor for some monstrous ancient device, and even my father had second thoughts about opening Helheim despite his desperate hope to find my mother.
It is a risk I’m ready to take, however, to solve this mystery once and for all.

This Level’s Introduction Screen

You will then be asked which outfit you prefer for Lara in this Level: The Drysuit Light or the Wetsuit? I seem to like the Drysuit Light.

Wetsuit

Next question: which Secondary Weapon would you like? If you browse through the Weapon selection the logical choice seems to be the Spear Gun. (you can always change that any time)

In a Cut Scene Lara arrives on her bike somewhere on the Polar ice. She installs a timed bomb, walks away and lets the explosion cause a big hole in the ice cap.

Lara dives into the hole. Brrr... ice cold water.

A new Journal Entry is now unlocked from where the Game play will start:

Your Sublevel Helheim starts here

Dive down deep enough to swim through a lower opening in the ice. You will encounter a number of Norse Statues standing on the bottom of the sea: 2 rows of 3 huge Statues facing each other along an elevated road. They are holding a sword in their hands pointing down. You can see that the heads of the Statues are hollow and have an opening on their back on top of what seems a staircase on first sight.

The Statues along the lane

The opening in the back of their hollow heads

You’ll encounter a number of Sharks here (5 to 7). If they get closer chase them and get them down with the Spear Gun when the targeting reticule turns from grey to red. (Thor’s Hammer isn’t of much use under water). You may want to get rid of them all by swimming around the group of Statues.

Better kill all the Sharks first

Swim in between the Statues to the lane and look at both sides of the lane. It is coming from far away on one side of the Statues passing some kind of a Gate and ends at the other side of them. Swim down to where it is ending and get an astonishing view of a ruined Temple complex constituting a Central Tower flanked by two smaller Towers.

The road comes through a Gate

The Ruins seen from the end of the road

Continue forward and upward to the Central Tower and notice how each of the Side Towers has a staircase leading upwards. Higher up the Central Tower there is a platform with an interacting wheel.

Keep swimming closer and higher to the central platform

Press yellow to pull the wheel.

Pull the wheel

A Cut Scene will then give you some clues of how to make the wheel fully operational.
First you will see the camera going down showing a two pairs of chains starting from a gear mechanism at the bottom of the Central Tower.
The camera then goes up diagonally left to a platform with two pedestals each having a receptacle. Notice a shiny object lying left of the pedestals on the floor.

The bottom mechanism with the chains

The pedestals with receptacles

The view then switches to the first Statue on the left (seen from the end of the road) and going down to show how the tip of his sword is going through a connector in the pair of chains, obviously blocking it. The camera then moves left from this connector to the bottom of the Tower gears showing the part of the pair of chains that spans over the gap between the road’s end and the Central Tower.

The Statue seen from below

Before exploring the two clues to the mechanism (the chains and the pedestals) swim higher up to obtain a view of the mushroom-like top of the Central Tower.

The top of the Central Tower

Now look down from this high position. You can see a pair of pedestals like shown in Cut Scene on each side of the central platform. The two smaller Towers each have a lower platform on the side of the central platform next to the pairs of pedestals. These lower platforms connect the staircase of a Side Tower with its open Entrance. The Side towers also have a platform at the bottom of their staircases.

The Tower platforms seen from above

Also notice a covered balcony on the wall of the Central tower facing the right Tower. There is a hole caused by some broken stone window bars. Swim to it and go into the room where your 1st Treasure of 30 is lying on the right.

The covered balcony

Swim inside

Your 1st Treasure found!

Leave this room and go down to inspect the chains you saw from the first clue. They run from wrenches at the foot of the Central Tower to similar wrenches under the Gate you saw on the other side of the road between the Statues. It becomes clear that these chains were meant to horizontally slide and roll up and off through either of the pairs of wrenches. Most likely the front part of the Central Tower is a raised draw-bridge that needs to connect the end of the road with the Entrance to the Tower.
This all suggests that this entire Ruin area once was built in open air but has been flooded long ago and now is sunken under water.

Follow the chains to the Gate

Have a look at the back side of the Gate with the wrenches. Swim through and see how the curving road is stretching out as far as you can see. It is flanked on either side by Statues of Serpents.

Follow the road past the Gate

There is no use in continuing on the road away from the Ruins, so turn back and watch the Gate from behind. Apparently the chains are rolled up here.

Return to the Gate

Notice how the chains are rolled up

Pass through the Gate and inspect each of the Statues by the lane.
Let’s number them first. The Statues on the left side – beginning from the Gate – are numbered L1-L3 and those on the right side R1-R3.
Notice that only L1, L2 and R3 have their swords sticking into a connector of the pair of chains. The sword of R1 is pulled out, R2 seems broken and L3 is missing its head and its sword is sticking out of the lane. Hence, only L1, L2 and R3 are blocking the chains from moving sideward.

Observe each Statue on your way back

In between R2 and R3 look right and notice two huge cogs lying on the sea floor down in front of the foot of R3. Turn right from the road and swim down to the bottom. You’ll find a Health Potion next to the first cog. Pick up the Health Potion (Autosave Ping).

Notice the two giant cogs

The Health Potion and the first cog

Swim to the first cog and notice it is lying in front of a n open gear mechanism in the side of R3 facing R2. First observe that there are two cogs missing on two empty axles.

The cogs obviously fell from the gears

The cog’s carvings are lighting up and a yellow sign appears meaning you can move it. Press yellow (interact) and the cog will turn vertically while Lara can maneuver it when swimming. Attach the central ring to the first axle.

Place the closest cog to where it belongs

Next swim to the second cog and attach this one to the second axle.

The second cog slides over the axle

The mechanism seems repaired now but nothing is happening. So it has to be triggered somewhere.
Swim down around the foot of R3. There is nothing to find that my trigger the mechanism though. Swim farther into its shadow where you can dive deep down into a dark trench. At the end of the shadow find Your 2nd Treasure.

Down to your 2nd Treasure

Continue left until you see the bones of a shark or another sea animal lying on the bottom. Left of it is a dark cave. Swim inside and find a Health Potion and your 3rd Treasure in there.

The bones of a shark (?)

Pick up the Health potion in the cave...

...and Treasure #3

Go out of the cave and turn left of the bones. Let’s dig this area for more goodies. Swim along the foot of the Ruins. Somewhat farther you’ll encounter Treasure #4.

Follow the wall and find Treasure #4

More investigation turns out futile so apparently you’ve picked up every goodie in this trench there is be found.
Return to R3.  You will have to get inside the Statue. The only place where you can enter the Statue is from the hole in the back of its head. Swim up and go inside. You’ll see a wheel.

Swim up from the staircase on the back of R3

Find a wheel inside the hollow head

Approach the wheel to get the interactive sign and press yellow to pull it.

The wheel is interactive

Pull it

In a Cut Scene you will see how the gears you repaired are working causing the giant Statue to lift its arms and pulling out the sword from the connector in the pair of chains.

The gears work again

The sword is lifted from the connector

Now while you’re here you may get into the heads of the other five Statues too:
R2: The head is broken and you already saw this Statue wasn’t carrying a sword either.

R2 has been destroyed

R1: The wheel has already been pulled forward like had to be expected since you previously saw how the sword was lifted from the chain’s connector.

The wheel has already been pulled

L1: The wheel is interactive, so you can pull it. The Statue will raise its sword from the connector of the chains. Turn around and find a Health Potion.

Ascend to the head of L1

Pull the wheel that lifts the sword from the connector

The Health Potion in L1’s head

L2. Pull the wheel and the Statue will lift the sword like happened with L1 and L3.
L3: The head is missing. Go inside its belly and find your 5th Treasure.

The head is missing

Go inside and find your 5th Treasure

By now the chain has been released and our business is finished here.
Go up to the platform with the pedestals shown in the second clue, between the left and the Central Tower. Pick up the shiny Gem you’ve seen lying there.

Swim to the platform with the pedestals from the clue

Pick up the gem

Place the Gem in a receptacle of one of the pedestals and watch how the carvings on the sides and the part of the floor of the pedestal are turning red. You definitely need to find more of these Gems.

Insert the Gem into the receptacle

The carvings are turning red

Go down to the lower platform in front of the stairs leading to the left Tower’s Entrance and find your 6th Treasure between the stairs and the fish bones.

Your 6th Treasure by the stairs

Follow the stairs to the platform of the Entrance and pick up a Health Potion before entering.
This is an Autosave point.

Get the Health Potion by the Entrance

Next: The Left Tower
