Sublevel 3: The Lost Valley

Part 1 - The Machine

Before we move on I think it is time to change Lara’s outfit. We’ve found a Relic two sublevels ago, and it may be very cold in the high Andes of Peru. Anyway, I’m also a bit fed up with that first outfit reminding me of the fifties girls, but then without the pistols...

When you select Awards in the main Menu you will see a section called Outfits. Select and you will have a choice between two outfits now. Try Legend.

Selecting the Legend outfit

However, you can only see Lara in this outfit but not dress her that way. So let’s try an experiment.
Select Croft Manor and replay the Level (you will keep your 8 Artifacts but lose all other items). First head for Lara’s private quarters and select the Legend outfit. You can now replay Croft Manor with that outfit. So we’ll have to replay the whole Level until we end up in the Music room and find out if she then still keeps wearing that outfit in the next Levels!
Select Croft Manor from the main Menu and press B11 (Pause). Select Restart Croft Manor. A window will tell you: All unsaved Croft Manor progress will be lost! Restart Croft Manor? Hmm... well OK then, let’s click on YES.

After having read Winston’s note go up to Lara’s private quarters. Press B1 in her wardrobe. I think I’ll slip into something else.

Select Legend

Now you can finish this Level in the Legend outfit!
Now finish the Level as explained in the Walkthrough. It will be another experience!
As a result, the first Relic has appeared in one of the exhibit cases in the Relics room.

The first Relic you found is here now

In the Gym room you don’t have to look for Artifacts.

You don’t have to look for Artifacts now

You haven’t seen Butler Winston before have you? Well here he is...

Meet Winston!

And here is your new end Level window in the music room.

Lara finishes the Level in her Legend outfit

Now let’s see if it was all worth it and go to this new Sublevel. Alas, Lara is still wearing that girlish outfit! But we have learned a couple of things by this experiment:

-         Lara may always replay Croft Mansion in any new outfit

-         The Relics are stored in the Relics Room’s glass cabinets

Resume Game

Go through the entrance and then right until you’re standing on the last step of the staircase. CHECKPOINT.  You’ll see two wolves running at you, but they will stay running in circles beneath Lara. Look down and you’ll see the red target circle. Shoot and look down again to see the circle again. Repeat this until they’re both dead (it will take some 20 shots – although this does not always work, in which case you can either shoot one wolf or none. In that case load the Sublevel again and retry or jump down shooting them while running around).

Sending these wolves to hell is easy from this step

Left of the waterfall there are some rocks where you will spot something shiny. Run to it and take a Cog.

You’ve found a Cog

Look in your inventory and you will read that this is Cog #1, meaning you will have to collect more cogs. Now turn around and notice a huge and complicated wooden machine to the right of the waterfall whose left wheels are spinning.

The weird machine

Left of the waterfall you’ll see a whole set of ledges apparently to climb up.

Before climbing all the way up let’s first jump into the water hoping to find some useful items in there.
Facing the staircase you’ll spot the entrance to a tunnel not far under the surface.
Go to the surface to take a deep breath again and now that you know where the tunnel’s entrance is, jump in again and take a fast swim through it.
You’ll end up in a cave (take a breath). You’ll hear the sound of a chime, pull up and take a Small Medipack.

The entrance to the tunnel leading to the cave

Return to the waterfall and notice a ladder leading upwards to the machine. Ignore the ladder for now and start your climb to the top of the waterfall on the side where you picked up Cog #1.

Climb two low rocks and proceed to where you have to jump to an opposite narrow ledge. Then vault up to the upper ledge.

The two narrow ledges

Shimmy left around the corner, pull up, take a higher step and jump to the platform where you can pick up some Shotgun Ammo.
Jump to an L-shaped narrow ledge and shimmy to the far right side. Make a lateral jump to the narrow ledge on your right.

Preparing for the lateral jump

Shimmy all the way around and jump up to a small platform. Jump to another L-shaped ledge and from the left side jump to another small platform where you pull up. Go two steps and look left and right. Left is a ladder where you may jump to and right are a couple of steps that lead to a platform.
Let’s keep it on the safe side and follow the steps. Ignore the urge to do a SWAN dive by the wall pillar and go into the tunnel. Turn right and in front of the 3 steps you’ll get a CHECKPOINT.
Jump over the river to the opposite ledge and pull up. There are three beams on your left side so better jump to the narrow ledge on your right and vault up one ledge.

When pressing backward you will prepare for a backward jump and note a red arrow on the left of the screen. That means there will be something to shoot soon. Jump backwards to the wooden ledge and the camera will turn left to a wooden bridge suspended by a couple of ropes with a coil in the middle.
Press B10 and position the white target circle to the coil. The circle will become red, so shoot.

Shoot the rope coil

The bridge will drop into the water leaving a pole on a beam behind.
Jump to the narrow ledge and shimmy around the corner until the middle of that section. Your back is now turned to the pole. Press backward to see the pole and a blue grapple circle. Notice the grapple circle pointing upward warning you about a grapple ring coming up soon.

The pole and the blue grapple circle

Jump backwards to the pole and swing/jump to the tunnel ledge. Pull up and enter the tunnel to your right. At the other end you can now see the blue grapple ring.

From this position you’ll have to grapple jump

Keep hanging and start swinging into the direction of the opposite wooden ledge. When you reach the highest point press B4 and jump to the ledge.
Shimmy around the corner and vault up. Jump to a higher ledge and shimmy to the corner where you’ll see a broken balcony floor on the opposite side. Sideward jump to the balcony’s side, shimmy a bit to the right and pull up.

The broken balcony floor

Pull up from the middle

Enter the tunnel, turn right and cross the safely suspended wooden bridge. On the opposite side turn right and collect your Cog #2. Your Inventory will show only 1 Cog although you have two of them now. (This a negligible glitch in the Game).

You’ve found Cog #2

CHECKPOINT. Shoot the 2 bats that immediately attack after you pick up the cog. That’s an easy kill.
Now turn around and notice that the ropes are suspended by a beam hanging on a golden ring. Aim at it and the circle will turn red (often by just turning into its direction the red ring will appear). The ropes will break causing the bridge to collapse.

Shoot the rope coil

The ring looks like a grapple ring now!
However, don’t leave this place yet! Look left and notice a hexagonal wheel spinning around and one of the vertices carries a horizontal pole. Hmm... it seems like you will have to jump to that pole when it is near enough.
Jump to the pole and if you miss it and drop into the water simply reload the game from the last checkpoint. Don’t forget to shoot a new pack of bats and the bridge coil.

Lara has grabbed the pole

Time to swing/jump to the opposite narrow ledge. Shimmy around the corner to the far right and jump to the higher narrow ledge.  Shimmy around the corner and jump up to one more higher ledge. Jump backward to a tunnel ledge, pull up and enter the tunnel, where you go to your right. Go down the ramp and on the left of the edge you will find a switch.
Pull the switch causing a CHECKPOINT and a barred door somewhere under water will rise.

The switch triggers an underwater door

If you look down from the edge you will see there is no way out, so better return to the opening of the tunnel. Hang down, shimmy to the right and drop to a narrow ledge below. You have just been here. Follow your way back to the opposite tunnel. Since the bridge is now hanging from the end edge, hang down from the edge and use the bridge as a ladder to descend. Stop halfway where you will notice a hole in the wall on your right. Side jump to the ledge.

Make a lateral jump to the ledge from this position

Pull up and you will take a crouched position. Follow the low tunnel until you can walk straight up again and pick up the Shotgun!

You’ve found the Shotgun

Also pick up a Large Medipack.  Lara is almost invulnerable now, but... be careful! Save them well for later when you will need lots of them!!
Check your inventory and select the Pistols.
Well, it seems like we’re finished here. Turn back and notice a nearby opening in front of the waterfall. Simply jump into the stream from here and let Lara flow with the water until she reaches the original entrance place.

A wild water splash ride

Once in the pool by the entrance to this Sublevel face the stairs from where you came down. Get out of the water and run/roll like hell to the stairs and jump to them. 3 wolves will appear from the left. Just like the first time, shoot them from the lowest step, all three in a row and don’t use your Shotgun (that would kill them faster), but use your Pistols to save on Ammo.

Kill the 3 wolves from the lowest step

Now run to the ladder and climb up to the wooden ledge. Place a Cog on the shaft with the yellow end and pull the lever left of it.
This will make the right part of the machine spinning. CHECKPOINT. Beautiful music too!

The second part of the machine is working again

Now you’ll see another hexagonal wheel with a pole on a vertex spinning above you. When the pole is at its lowest point, jump to it. The next wheel is bigger and has two poles. When one pole is nearest swing/jump to it.
Approach the ladder when spinning around and swing/jump to it. Climb all the way up to the top and place the second cog on the yellow end of the shaft.
Pull the lever next to it.
More parts of the machine will now rotate and you’ll get a CHECKPOINT.
To the right of the lever is a broken narrow ledge that you should jump to.

Jump to this narrow ledge

Shimmy right and side jump past the broken part of the ledge to your right. Shimmy around the corner near the end and jump to the higher narrow ledge. Jump backward to the wooden platform behind you and pull up.
In front of Lara a spinning wheel carries a wooden platform that spins along with the wheel. When it reaches a horizontal position jump to it, run to the other end and immediately jump to a stable wooden platform.

Jump from the spinning platform to the stable platform

Now on this platform there is another shaft that needs a Cog. In fact this wasn’t the right move because you don’t have a third Cog. But remember how to get to the shaft. So turn around to the first platform (or load your savegame of the latest checkpoint) and go back there.
Go to the corner of this platform and notice a dangling rope and a narrow ledge to the right of the corner. Jump to the ledge.

Jump from here

Shimmy right along two corners and notice a higher narrow ledge and a lower opening in the wall. Let’s first examine that opening. Drop down and pull up where Lara will crouch. Crawl through the opening and slide down. Jump up and find a Large Medipack. Slide down from the long black ramp and left from another small ramp and end near the waterfall.
Go up the ladder again and follow the same way to reach the ledge on top of the cave with the Medipack.
This time jump up to the higher ledge and position Lara such that she’s hanging aligned with the rope (focus the camera) and jump backward, grabbing the rope.

Jump to the rope from this position

Lara is facing the top of a waterfall now. Turn her one quarter to the left and she will be facing a narrow ledge on the opposite wall.

Lara is facing the opposite ledge

Start swinging up and down and when high enough jump to the ledge. Shimmy right around the corner and prepare for a jump to a nearby ledge.

Jump to this ledge

Drop down to the balcony,  and the ladder (that was the ladder we saw before when we decided not to jump to it – but now you’re seeing it from the other side) will fall down leaving a pole behind. I think Lara’s heavy weight may have caused that trembling. She really should work out some more in her Gym Palace and lose some weight, that heavy fat-ass. Ah, we all know where the bulk of her weight is, now don’t we?

The falling ladder leaves a pole behind

There is also an entrance to a cave that Lara is facing now. That looks very tempting so let’s go inside first.  Jump up to a block where Lara will crouch, get off and proceed a while for a CHECKPOINT. Crouch under a rock and notice a hut in the cave. Proceed and immediately run to a wooden ledge (the lowest platform of a wooden construction) on your left and jump up. That is because a bear will emerge from the hut and chase Lara. You can shoot the bear from here when he stays under you. Anyway this is an easy kill.

The bear emerges

Climb the next ledge and look on your right. You will see a cave with an Artifact that you can’t reach from here.

The cave with the Artifact is on your right

Go down again and walk in the direction of the hut while you keep looking upward to locate the entrance of the cave in the wall that contains the Artifact you just spotted. When you see it, turn around and notice a narrow ledge right opposite the cave’s entrance. From there you could jump to the cave! The damned ledge is too high! On your right you see the hut. It has a sloping roof. There’s nothing in or around the hut, so leave that. Now turn around again and look up. The narrow ledge turns around the corner. Still higher up you can see a high platform. I would guess if you would jump from there to the roof and slide down you could jump to the narrow ledge! So let’s go up to that higher platform.

Looking up to the cave’s entrance

See how the ledge turns around the corner

The sloping roof opposite the corner

Return to the lowest ledge on the left side of the wooden structure (from where you shot the bear) and jump up one platform. Proceed until the end of this platform and turn left. Jump to a wooden narrow beam and vault up to a ledge where you shimmy to the right behind the corner and pull up. Jump to the first platform and then to the second platform. A shiny object is lying there. Pick it up.

You’ve found the 50 Caliber Pistol Ammo

Whatever that may be, it’s good to keep it in your inventory. Walk to the end beam (facing the cabin's roof). Now look around from this edge. On your right there is a small wooden ramp with an opening above it. If you look carefully there is also an opening on the side near the entrance of this cave. Remember this side entrance. Left notice two pillars each with a pointed top and left in front of you look at another entrance to some kind of tunnel through the opposite wall. Look down in front of you to see the cabin’s roof. Focus the camera in front of Lara and move her to the middle of the end beam. Look down and she should be standing exactly above the narrow grey ledge you just saw from the ground. The Artifact’s cave is on her left now.

Lara above the narrow ledge

Now jump to the roof (press backward + B4) and as soon as you touch the roof press B4 and jump to the ledge.

Lara hanging from the ledge now

Shimmy left around the corner and press backward to make a jump to the cave with the Artifact. Pick it up.

Reaching the cave with the Artifact

Three beams block your way further into the cave, but you can look through and spot a Small Medipack behind them.

A Small Medipack beyond reach

Return: hang from the ledge and drop to the floor. Ascend the same way to the upper platform like you did before.
Go to the opposite end beam in the right corner and jump to the narrow ledge.

Stand in this corner facing the ledge

Shimmy right around the corner and vault up to the higher ledge. Stand in line with the top of the first pillar (focus the camera). Jump backward to perch on the first pillar, turn to the second and jump/perch, and from there to the ledge (in the hole).

The way to get into the hole

Slide down the ramp, turn right and look up to an opening in the wall. That must be the other end of the hole with the side hole I told you to pay attention to. Jump to the first (tallest) of two pointed pillars. Climb up to the top and turn your back to the slope near the wall. Jump backward and as soon as you touch the slope press B4 to perch on the lower pillar. From there jump to the hole and enter. At the end opening where a slope is going down enter the opening left in the wall that you saw before, and face the opposite wall. Jump to the opposite narrow ledge. Drop one down and let go. There is your Small Medipack on the floor at the other side of the three beams and this time pick it up.

The Small Medipack you spotted before

Return the same way to the tunnel, jump down and continue up to the stairs (CHECKPOINT) where you will notice some Shotgun Ammo. If you can’t pick it up check your inventory: if you have 40 shells that is the maximum you can carry. So leave them here for later.
Proceed and notice a wooden slope. Jump to it and slide down. When you’re near the end jump to an opposite narrow ledge (if you jump too early you’ll drop dead on the floor).
Make a sideward jump to a ledge on your right where there is more Shotgun Ammo. Leave that for later if you have 40 shells.
Jump to the pole and from there swing/jump to the opposite narrow ledge and vault up to the next ledge. Shimmy left and pull up. CHECKPOINT.

Turn right and proceed to the wooden ledge. In front of you is a narrow ledge and left you can spot a Large Medipack on a stone platform to the left.

Jump from this point to the ledge

Shimmy all the way around the corner until the end and jump backward to an opposite narrow ledge. Immediately shimmy fast (repeatedly pressing B1) to the right and drop to the platform as soon as you reach the edge. Two bats will attack so shoot them fast.
Collect the Large Medipack. Inspect the surroundings. There is a wooden ledge and to the right of it on the opposite wall you’ll see three very narrow ledges that lead downward. Notice that the middle one is broken except for a small part to the right.

The three tiny ledges on the opposite wall

The wooden ledge certainly will continue your quest, but what about these three ledges? We’ll have to investigate them first, so jump to the highest of the three and shimmy right. Drop down to the two lower ones. Shimmy to the left on the lowest ledge and look backward by pressing backward and notice a ledge on the opposite wall.

A ledge to jump to

Jump backward to this ledge. Pull up and enter a dark cave. Turn right and find a Large Medipack. So that little side trip wasn’t in vain! Return the same way to the upper ledge. When jumping backward from the highest ledge you will end up on a ledge under the platform. Vault up to the platform and pull up.
Now you may continue your journey along the wooden platform. Jump to the block, pull up and Lara will crouch. Dropping from the block you’re arriving in a mossy green tunnel. Run all the way through it until the opening with a wooden ledge (CHECKPOINT). As soon as you step on this ledge it will collapse and you will slide down.
Proceed and you’ll get a new CHECKPOINT when entering Jurassic Park!

Prepare for the Dinosaurs!

Now let's go to Peru Sublevel 3: The Lost Valley, Part 2 - Jurassic Park
