Level 1: Peru

Sublevel 1: Mountain Caves

When starting a Level you will get the settings screen first.
Select your Difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard (I play it on Medium). You can turn the Manual Grab On or Off and then Start Game.
In the Levels – that are all linear – you get Checkpoints as well, but you can also save whenever you want. However, when restarting, you’ll start from your latest Checkpoint. There are also Autosaves at the end of each Sublevel. You may consider saving right after a Checkpoint.

We find Lara in the lobby of a Hotel in Calcutta , India , 1996 (must be the Oberoi Grand), reading a book. A big fellow enters the lobby and throws a magazine on the table with a cover showing Lara: Tomb Raider - Croft bags … Bigfoot?

Larson: What’s a man got to do to get that sort of attention from you?
Lara: If that’s the sort of attention you want, Larson, You’re well on your way.
Larson: Sounds like fun, but I’m only here to make an Introduction. Lara Croft, meet Jacqueline Natla, of Natla Technologies.
Larson opens a laptop on Lara’s table.

Jacqueline Natla

Jacqueline Natla: Good afternoon, Miss Croft. My research department has recently turned its focus to the study of ancient artifacts. And I’m led to believe that, with the right incentive, you’re just the woman to find them for me.
Lara: I’m afraid you’ve been misled. I only play for sport.
JN: Which is precisely why I’ve come to you, Miss Croft. This is a game you’ve played before; with your Father. You both spent years searching for the Scion of Atlantis. All you needed was the location of Qualopec’s Tomb.

JN shows Lara the Scion of Atlantis

Lara: You’ve found Vilcabamba?
JN: How quickly can you get to Peru ?

The next scene shows us scenery high in the Andes and a narrator says: Vilcabamba continues to elude us, and my insistence that we press on in spite of these failures has morale low... I suspect Jenkins to be the author of this sedition; he simply refuses to accept the possibility that Atlantis is the foundation upon which all known civilizations were built. Increasingly, I find it is Lara alone who remains untainted by academic dogma and open-minded enough to see his truth.
Lara’s guide is climbing a ladder up above, but at the end it breaks and the ladder drops down and falls into pieces.
Guide:
(in Spanish) I’m sorry, I didn’t bring enough rope.
Lara: Not to worry. I’ll find another way up.
CHECKPOINT.
This is where you get in control.
If you want to save here, press B11 (Pause) and select Save. Click on New saved game and another window pops up Enter Savegame name. Replace Savegame 1 by whatever name you like. I selected Start Andes. Then click OK.

Run to the far wall and climb the rock in front of it. Press forward + B4 to grab the ledge. When you shimmy press B1 repeatedly to make Lara move faster. Shimmy all the way around to the right and then press right + B4 to jump then traverse the gap in the ledge.

Make a lateral jump to the right side

Shimmy around the corner and near the end press right + B4 to jump off the ledge to the rock behind you. Pull up and turn left. Jump to the ledge that looks like a staircase with 3 steps. Climb the steps, jump to the narrow ledge and vault up to the ledge above. Turn left and notice a blue grapple ring. Focus the camera so that the ring is in front of you. Press forward + B4 and immediately after that press B2. This is a grapple jump. When on the opposite side press B4 to let go and end up on the other side of a broken bridge. Ascend the stairs on your right.
A small cut scene will show you the Mountain Caves. CHECKPOINT. Meet your guide by the entrance.

The entrance to the Mountain Caves

Your second meeting with the guide

Let the guide talk to you (always press B1):
There you are. Look we have arrived. I don’t know how to open it. There’s an inscription above the door. I’m very tired. We can go to the left. I’m only the guide.

Go to a formation of white rocks left of the gates (somewhat in front of them).

Run up the rocks from this position

From the end ledge jump to the opposite higher platform and pull up.
Turn right where you’ll see a blue grapple hook on top of the gates. Grapple jump to the opposite platform and pull up. Jump to the ledge on the right side of the gates, shimmy left and vault up.
Pull up on top of the gates and notice a yellow button in the wall.

Push this button

A cut scene will now show you how the gates will open.

Lara watches how the gates are opening

A bunch of wild wolves comes running from inside the cave attacking the guide. Lara will fire her pistols and kill them one by one, but... the guide is dead. Lara enters the caves and the gates will close. CHECKPOINT.

The attack of the cave wolves

Walk into the cave until a large pressure pad.

The pressure pad

When you step onto the pad a row of darts starts shooting. Run and roll under the first two.

Run and roll under the darts

The following three rows each have a lower reach as well. Stand before one and when the 3 darts have shot immediately pass and wait in front of the next row. Repeat this tactic. The last row shoots it darts in a sequence. When the lowest dart has shot run/roll and you’ll leave this trap without any injury (one hit would halve your stamina!).

Turn right for your next CHECKPOINT. Climb the stairs to the broken bridge and jump to the opposite side. Turn left and jump to the wooden platform above the wooden beams. Pull up and turn around spotting a small ledge above the platform you just jumped from.

Jump to this ledge from here

Pull up and jump to the opposite platform. Turn right and jump to the tunnel. At the end turn right and jump to a stone ledge on a platform.  Pull up and from here you’ll see a shiny thing above the next platform. Slide down (only a little) and from the ramp jump to the ledge. You’ll hear a chime. This Artifact looks different from what we’ve seen in the Mansion.

Getting to the Artifact

Turn around and jump to the ledge on the thick central pillar. Shimmy left around the corner and let go. You’re now in a higher cave from where you see the darts below. Go into the cave. CHECKPOINT. Move on and 4 bats will attack you. When the circles get red shoot them by pressing B6 repeatedly. You are in a T-section now. Go left and climb a small flat rock on your right. Jump to the opposite ledge, pull up, follow left and collect a Large Medipack.

Continue along the main cave until you see snowflakes falling down. Look up and there is an opening in the ceiling. Turn left, kill 3 more bats and get a CHECKPOINT.
Now look around into a large cave with a central column like a petrified tree. Left you see something shiny, there’s a ramp leading down at the edge in front of you and a grapple ring high in front of you.
Slide from the ramp and immediately press B4 and B2 in a row to hang from the grapple ring. You will see 2 blue arrows, pointing up and down.
Turn toward the ledge under the greenery and climb up to its height.

Start swinging from here

When you’re about at the ledge’s height press B4 to let go ending up hanging from the ledge.
NOTE: if you missed the ring you will either drop dead to the floor or get heavily injured. If still alive you’ll have to kill two bats and find your way up to this platform again along a series of narrow ledges. But in that case better load the savegame that you made after the last checkpoint and try again.

Shimmy left and vault to the higher ledge. Jump backward to the opposite ledge on the central column.

A backward jump

Shimmy right until you are above the lower ledge and let go. Shimmy right around the corner until the far end and jump backwards to the opposite ledge. Pull up and grab an Artifact.

The shiny thing was an Artifact

But now we’ve got to get out of this cave! So walk to the edge and look down. OK, there is a narrow ledge underneath, so hang down from up above.

Let go to the lower ledge from this position

Let go to the floor and immediately kill 2 bats. Run around and find a lower cave.

Drop down from this spot

At the end you’ll see a door and a lever on the right side. Pull the lever and the door will rise. Run down and follow until a CHECKPOINT.
Run around until you come to a bridge, but don’t jump on it. You will hear the sound of howling wolves. There are two wolves running around on the floor below. Walk left along the edge and look down until you are standing above a low rock on the floor below. One of them (sometimes both) will be on the rock and when you look down you will see a red circle around one wolf meaning you can shoot him from here. Each time after a shot look down again. After about 10 shots he’s on his way to Kingdom Wolf. OK, that’s one of them we’ve got down.

Knocking down the first wolf

To get the second one take a running jump and when he chases you turn around running backwards while continuously shooting at him.
Now return to that low rock. Climb up, and cross the bridge until it collapses in the middle and you’ll drop to the floor. Go to the corner on your right and pick up a Small Medipack in the cave.
Turn around and notice an Artifact in a higher cave in the opposite corner.

How are we going to get that Artifact?

The wall is too high to jump to so there must be another way. Jump to the upper plank of the dangling opposite part of the broken bridge. Jump higher and pull up. CHECKPOINT.
Turn right and jump to an almost invisible crevice in the wall.
Jump one higher and pull up. On your right there is another bridge, suspended by ropes. Cross this safe bridge, turn left and jump to a platform. You’re in a room full of pillars. Walk to the central path, turn right and head for a dangling rope above a pit. Jump toward the rope.

Use the Movement button to swing or change direction. Turn a quarter left to notice a Medipack in a cave. Swing up and down and get into the cave where you pick it up.
From there jump into the pit and immediately run to a low platform in the opposite right corner because a huge bear will appear chasing you. Pull up where the bear can’t reach you and shoot him repeatedly until he’s ready for your Foyer’s new bear skin rug.
Jump off the rock and turn left into another cave. Also here is a door and a lever. Pull the lever that opens the door.
Jump down to hear a chime sound. Turn right and grab the Artifact you saw before.

There is that Artifact

The damned door has closed so you’ll have to jump to the floor. Climb the broken bridge again, cross the suspended bridge and return to the rope above the bear pit. Underway is a CHECKPOINT. Now jump to the rope again and swing/jump to the opposite part. Run left around the pillars until the other pit and find a Large Medipack.

Run down from the ramp and ascend some stairs. On your right you will see a pit, some greenery and a pole sticking out on your left. If you press B4 and hold you will jump higher and farther. Use that to jump to the pole. Swing/jump to the 4 steps. Keep climbing on your right, then up the stairs and left until the CHECKPOINT.

There is another damn row of darts again. Jump /roll under the first two.
At #3 wait until the couple of darts has been shot and proceed. The same at #4 and #5 (that has 3 sets of darts).
At #6 wait for the middle dart to be shot and run/roll.
#7 has a different pattern. Study it carefully. When the lower and the middle have gone, immediately run/roll.
#8 also has two patterns. Pass without any injury when the three are simultaneously shot.

Proceed to the pressure pad in front of the large gate. The camera will go upward where you’ll see two enormous beams that stick into each door and then will move to the left. While moving up and to the left you will also notice poles above the gates that are sticking out each having the same length. Remember these poles.

The lower pole between the locking beams

The camera turning left – notice the upper pole too

That means you will have to start your ascent from the left side. You’re now urged to access Lara’s Journal. There must be a way to open this door. Gosh, we sure couldn’t have guessed that better.

Look left and right. On your right there is a platform but the narrow ledge from where to vault is too high to jump to.
Go to the left niche and look up. There are two narrow ledges. Jump thrice to reach the second floor. Pull up and you’ll hear the howling of a wolf

Run in, turn left, and as soon as the wolf runs through the opposite door towards Lara keep shooting and running backwards.
Continue to the far end and turn left. Swing/jump over three poles in a row to the opposite side. There another wolf will howl. Run in and turn left and let two wolves run at you. Then kill them the same way as the first. Run all the way to the end and turn right. Climb the two narrow ledges.
See that pole behind you?

The pole behind Lara

Jump backward and the pole will rotate 90 degrees hanging parallel with a huge counterweight. Swing/jump to it and Lara’s weight will let it go down pulling up the locker beam in the right gate.

Lara’s weight on the counterweight will raise the right locker beam

When Lara lets go the beam will slowly lower into the gate again, so this is a question of timing. You’ll hear a slow ticking.
Rather than running all around again to the opposite side let go to the floor via the narrow ledge (that was too high, remember?) and run to the opposite niche where you climbed up a while ago.

Now turn right and jump to the narrow ledge on your left, shimmy to the corner and jump higher up. Shimmy around the corner until the end and side jump to the other counterweight. Lara’s weight will pull it also down which will raise the beam of the left door.

The lateral jump to the counterweight

The left beam rises now too

Go down the same way and again stand on the pressure pad. Both gates will now open revealing a huge staircase going up. CHECKPOINT.

The gates open up!

Look up again and notice that the lower pole of the two that I asked your attention on has slid forward and is protruding farther than the one above. Hmm... nothing in this game is meaningless so let’s investigate that.

The lower pole has protruded

Jump up again on the left side and run all around to the counterweight on the right side. Climb the two narrow ledges on your right again and push backward to see the pole again that turned you in front of the counterweight before.

Jump backwards to the pole again and as soon as it starts rotating immediately press B4 while you keep pressing backward. Lara will jump to a very tiny ledge in the opposite corner now.

Lara jumps to the corner now

Shimmy to the far left and sideward jump to the pole that has protruded.

Jump sideward to the protruded lower pole

Now face Lara so that she is hanging exactly in front of a grey and broken corner ledge above the open left gate and swing/jump to it.

Swing/jump to the tiny narrow ledge

Jump up one ledge and jump backwards to the upper pole behind you.

From the higher ledge to the higher pole

Swing/jump to the opposite ledge and to the roof ledge.

You have to reach the roof

Walk on the roof. What you see here is a Relic spinning around.

Take the Relic

You’ve found the Killer Whale Bottle. This represents a ceramic bottle from approximately AD 700 depicting a mythological killer whale. Such vessels were most likely used for drinking fermented Chicha.

Jump down from the long edge of the roof above the narrow ledge and let go. Now go down again and enter the gates.
A window will appear meaning the end of this sublevel.

The extended window

Would you like to save your progress? Say YES.

Now let's go to Peru Sublevel 2: City of Vilcabamba
