Croft Manor

Part 1
Part 2

A Different Mansion

Lara’s Mansion is entirely different from the one in 1996. She probably must have rebuilt it... But it looks similar to her Legend Mansion, although not the same.

In this Level there are two kinds of objects to collect:
-         Tools (including Pistols and the Grapple)
-         Artifacts
Tools are inevitable for finishing the Level. Because this is a non-linear Level, I will provide you with the most logical sequence for collecting the Tools.

There are 8 Artifacts to collect, each one in the shape of a crystal Elephant statue. Whenever you encounter one you will hear a chime. These Artifacts are of no importance to further Levels. You just collect them for fun. If you find all 8, you’ll get a small bonus: looking at a trailer of all previous Tomb Raider Games.

In conclusion: the importance of finishing this Level is getting the Pistols and the Grapple, plus learning how to get control of Lara’s skills.

Checkpoints

You can’t save the game in this Level and I suppose you can’t in the other Levels either. You will regularly get a Checkpoint, especially when you find a tool or enter a room you will get one. This means: if you exit the game and start up the Mansion Level again, you will end up at your last checkpoint with everything you had found so far. Apparently there seems to be an unlimited amount of checkpoints as they are overwritten each time.

The Foyer

When you open this Level you will see Lara walk into the Foyer from a double door and she reads a note on the central table:

Miss Croft, Pardon the mess in the Foyer, but a rather large shipment of antiquities arrived while you where out.
I would have had the crates placed in the Gallery, but the security alarm has somehow been activated, locking the room from the inside.
If this was not concerning enough, the renovators have shut off the water supply to the entire Manor in order to continue construction of the pool house.
On the bright side, I’ve located your missing Journal and returned it to its appointed hiding place in your room.
Faithfully in your service,
Winston.

Winston is Lara’s Butler and occasionally you may meet him, but he has no tea cups and he doesn’t speak – so just ignore the guy. And you don’t have to lock him up in the freezer either because there isn’t one.

This message means there is something wrong with the Manor that Lara will have to rectify and she will have to find her Journal and open the water supply to the Manor.

After reading the letter, Lara will face the fireplace which is your first checkpoint. Left and right of the fireplace there is an accessible door.
Turn left to see a double staircase leading to the second floor, and turn right to notice a bunch of crates on the opposite side of the staircase with antiquities that Winston mentioned in his note.
Turn around to face the double entrance/exit door. There is a door in each corner left and right of the entrance door. The one in the left corner is inaccessible. The door in the right corner leads to the garden and the maze. When running up the stairs to the balconies there are 2 doors on the left and the right side – all four are accessible.
However, for the time being do not enter any of these doors. A few of them will be locked after entrance, so you have to be careful.

First we have to finish our business here in the Foyer. Throughout this Level there are books scattered all around. When you pass one you will notice a yellow triangle with an exclamation sign in the lower right corner of the screen. Whenever you see such a sign it means you can interact with the Action Button B1. Then Lara will read a passage usually referring to one of the next Levels. However, some of them give you a hint. You will notice the difference when Lara will read such a passage again. With those of no importance she will say I’ve read this before. But the ones that give a hint can be read again. One of them will speak of a Bow. That means you will have to look for a bow. The yellow explanation sign always means you can use the Action button. You can open doors or apply a device.

You will start with one small and one large medipack. Move the camera to the two stacks of crates that Winston mentioned and a smaller stack in the middle under a painting.
In front of the middle stack there is a plate on the floor. Go stand on the plate and notice how a panel will rise above the fire and reveal a golden arrow. Apparently that is why you will need the bow.

The plate in front of the stack of crates

Move away and the panel will lower again. That means you will have to put a weight on the plate to keep the panel open!  Run between the crates (between the left and the middle stack) and notice a smaller light brown crate that mentions “fragile”.  Stand in front of it and the yellow exclamation triangle will appear on the lower right side of the screen. Press the Action Button and Lara will grab this crate.

The moveable crate

Maneuver the crate with your direction controls and place it onto the plate. Once on there you cannot move the crate anymore, so release it by pressing the Action Button once again. Now the panel stays open. Walk to the fireplace.
It’s rather hot. In order to get the golden arrow you will have to extinguish the fire but that is something to do later. The yellow triangle will indicate that you have to press the Action Button B1 but Lara will say No.

Now go to the right side stack and climb the first crate that is covered with a gray fabric. Press forward + B4 to climb. Continue climbing the next crates. When Lara hangs on the 3rd crate press B4 to climb up. Now climb the last crate and move your direction button to the left. Face the wall and jump left by pressing B4 and directing your left stick to the left. Now Lara will hang from the painting’s frame.

Lara hangs from the painting

Shimmy to the far left and at the left corner point your left joystick to the left. Now Lara will turn to the left hanging on her right arm and continuously keeps swinging her left arm into the direction of the left stack of crates. Combine pressing B4 to let her jump to the left upper crate.

Preparing for the jump to the left crate

From the second crate jump over the gap to a broken crate. Do this by pressing forward + B4.

Lara is hanging from the crate in front of a shiny sphere

Pull up and when you get the yellow exclamation sign press B1 to pick up the object.

You’ve found the Sculpture Gear

I wonder where this goes says Lara. We’ll find out later in the maze. Now return to the floor. When hanging from a lower crate (or any other ledge in the future) press B3 to drop down.
For the time being you’re finished here in the Foyer.

The Dual Pistols

Run all the way up the central staircase to the left balcony and run to the second door at the end. While standing in front of the door the yellow exclamation triangle will appear. Press B1 to open the door and when she’s inside press B7 to see what she is seeing.
Run through the corridor. Go left and continue until the end of corridor (you may read a couple of book pages on the way) in front of the left door.
Open the door and press B7. You will enter Lara’s private quarters. To the left of the door is a plaque in between two pedestals each with a lever.
Pull each lever down and the plaque will open revealing an object.

The Levers will open the Medusa plaque hiding an object

You’ve found Lara’s Journal.
I wonder if Winston would have read in it. Access Lara’s Journal in the Items Menu of the Inventory to hear her thoughts on the current situation.

Press B12 and browse to the Journal. Press B4 to open it: Medusa was a frightful creature in Greek Mythology. So now you know that.
Walk into the dressing room. From now on you can press B1 to try on a different outfit. But for the time being you only have one. You have to collect RELICS to unlock new outfits for Lara and then return here for another outfit.

Now walk into the bedroom. Not much to do here but reading some silly book pages about pink replacing black and some stuff on Eskimos.
So leave the private quarters and return to the balcony.
Run to the door by the staircase and enter another L-shape corridor. Follow it until the end and open the door on your right. As soon as you enter here the green light on the left side of the door will turn red and starts constantly beeping. Turn around and try to open the door. I’ve never been fond of locked doors. Yes, you’re trapped here so we’ll have to find another way out. This is the Library.

Notice a ring on the chandelier hanging above the table and remember this ring for later. Turn to the row of books on the left under the balcony and notice a book sticking halfway out. The triangle will appear when you approach it. Use B1 and a door will open on your right.
Inside is a sparkling roll. Grab the roll: you’ve found the Maze Map. No wonder Father never got lost. Have a look at the map and head up the stairs to the balcony. Run all around and enter the library room on the second floor. On the opposite bookshelves you’ll see two colored books sticking out. Push them in and in between them a panel will open revealing a shiny plaque. Go inside and find the Dual Pistols. Now all I need is something to shoot.

Lara found the Dual Pistols

Well, you’ll find something to shoot. Leave the room and turn right where you will see a Crystal Elephant statue in a glass cabinet.

Your first Artifact

Stand in front of it and press B6 to shoot the glass into pieces. That is your 1st artifact. You can always check your number of found Artifacts by pressing B11 and opening the Level statistics. By doing so you will notice 1/8.

Head for the end of the balcony (don’t drop down) and go past the room where you see a painting. Jump to the painting and Lara will hang from the frame. Her weight (!) will slide the painting down revealing a round target.

The painting and the target

Now there you have something else to shoot! But you have to act fast. Jump backwards to the balcony and immediately turn toward the target. You will see a red arrow meaning you can shoot without aiming. Shoot fast by pressing B6 because the painting will start rising as soon as you jump away.
When you hit the target a secret door will rise in a corner of the first floor.
Run down the stairs and you will find the open door on your right.
Enter and run down the stairs. Turn left and a stack of crates will be in your way. Stand in front of the first crate and spy a shiny object in a niche on the left.

A shiny object

Run inside and pick it up: you’ve found the Empty Bucket. This could come in handy.

The empty bucket

Jump over the crates and continue to the left, run up the stairs and find a door with a button in the wall on your left. Push the button and the door will slide open.
You’re in the Relics room now. Run to the door with the flashing red light and you’ll realize this door is closed too. Run upstairs to the balcony and enter a room with a shiny object on the wall.

A shiny object on the wall

Aim at it and shoot the glass window. You’ve found the Sundial Gnomon. This belongs down in the garden, what’s it doing in here?  Remember this clue.
Under the windows are three open books. The one on the right will tell you: The concept of the sundial has existed for thousands of years and is one of the earliest devices for time measurement. There’s some numbers written on the inside cover: 11-2-7. I wonder what they refer to?
If you read this page again Lara will repeat the numbers: 11-2-7, so this is a clue to remember. Don’t bother reading the other two books.

Return downstairs, push the red button by the exit door and it will turn green. Go through the door and run through a U-shaped corridor until you reach the end door. Exit and surprise... this is the first door on the other balcony.

The Garden and the Maze

Now it’s time to pay a visit to the garden. Run down the stairs and turn right, ascend some stairs and enter the door in the corner accessing the garden.
Run down the stairs, turn right and open the door at the far end. Keep running outside, turn left in the center of the hallway and... meet the sundial.

Notice a tile representing the gnomon. Select the gnomon and put it in the sundial. Go to the gate giving access to the maze and read the plate on the pedestal: Garden Hours: 11:00AM to 7:00 PM.
Now return to the sundial and grab it. Keep turning until the arrow points at XI (the Latin 11). The tile will rise. Then point it at II (2) and let it rise.

Tiles XI and II have risen

Finally point at VII (7).

This just proves time never stands still.

The gate will open and you can now enter the Maze. First have a good look at the map.

The Maze Map

On the bottom you see an arrow pointing at the central section. That is what you are seeing now, but its front gate is closed. Further you see a number of ornaments like a cross, a circle, square etc. These are locations where Artifacts are found.
You can print the map from here, but the problem is this: when you run through the maze following the map your camera point of view will often change at an opening and you will lose your orientation. So in fact it is of little use.
The alternative is randomly running around until you found everything.
The entrance to the central part is on the opposite side; all other gates are closed.

Now run to the front gate and a cut scene will show you the location of the Grapple in the central section behind the gate. Start exploring the Maze and find the entrance to the central section.

The Artifact by the Cross

The Artifact by the Statue

The Artifact by the Rectangle

The entrance to the opposite side of the central section

Run inside and take the Grapple. This should help to reach into those hard to reach places.

You’ve found the Grapple

Now face the front gate by the Lever (ignore the lever for now) and press B2 (but don’t hold). Lara will throw the Grapple on it and it will attach to the gate. Then keep pressing B1 until you pulled the gates open. This should make for a shorter return trip. Release the Grapple by B3.
On top of one of the statues you will notice a shiny object which you can’t reach for the time being.

Now turn around and pull the black plaque out of the wall with your Grapple. Place the Statue Gear in the middle, this is the missing gear.
We’re finished here for the time being so return to the Foyer of the Mansion through the front gate.

Now remember the Library with the ring on the chandelier? Return to the room (the first one on the left balcony) and enter in there. Now the red flashing light will turn green also. Throw the Grapple at the ring and pull the chandelier down. Next a secret door will glide open in the corner. Turn around to the door and collect an Artifact.

The Artifact in the chandelier door

The Gym Room

Return to the first floor of the Foyer because now it’s time for a little workout in Lara’s Gym room. The room is left of the fireplace. Enter a small L-shaped corridor and run through the open door on your right. Pass the fountain room into the actual Gym room.
First have a good look around here. On your right is an empty swimming pool (remember the water supply has been cut off).
Have a look in the swimming pool and notice a round pipe sealed off by a door. Remember this door.

The sealed off pipe in the empty pool

There are three blue run and jump pads numbered 1 to 3.
In between them there are four low pillars. Up above are a number of poles, niches, some poles hanging from the roof and a large grey suspended platform high up.
First run and jump from pad 3 and jump up to the next ledge. Shimmy around to your left and notice a blue grapple sign on your left.
Let Lara stop swinging. Now focus the camera to the wall and climb a little higher by pressing forward + B1.

Take this position

Keep swinging left and right and at the highest point left press left + B4. Lara will hang on a ledge above the alcove in the corner. Shimmy around and drop to the lower narrow ledge. Side jump right to the corner niche and press the button inside.
This will make a vertical pole rotate 90 degrees.

Next face jump pad #1, run and jump to the cross-like carrousel and grab the one in front of you. The carrousel will turn 90 degrees clockwise.

Lara is facing a narrow ledge

Swing/jump to the narrow ledge in the wall.
(Note: just like with the other carrousel you have to jump fast because the carrousel will immediately slowly rotate in the opposite sense so you will end up left of the ledge and drop to the floor. You may have to repeat this a few times).
Left jump to the next narrow ledge and from there jump backwards to the second carrousel which will also rotate 90 degrees. Swing/jump to the opposite narrow ledge and from there side jump to the vertical row of green hand grips on your right. Climb all the way upwards. Keep pressing upward + B4 to jump backwards to the niche with the Small Medipack. Pull up and take it.
Push the button inside the niche and the four low pillars will all rise.

The pillars are rising now

Next run/jump from pad #2 to the opposite ledge and move up to the next one. Shimmy left around the corner and jump backward to the first raised pillar. When standing on the pillar Lara will soon lose her balance and drop down unless you press B1. Now face the second pillar and jump to it and immediately to the narrow ledge on the wall.

From the second pillar to the ledge

Shimmy left to the ledge in the rock and jump one up. Now shimmy all around to the other side of the rock and jump backwards to the niche.
Here you will get your next Artifact.

The Artifact in the niche

Pull up and take it. Let go to the ledge below and to the floor without getting hurt.
Now return to pad # 3 and again let Lara end up on her grapple. This time go higher up.

Ascend to this position

Start swinging from left to right and perform the following actions very fast:

-         when you’re nearing your highest position to the left press B7 to focus the camera to the wall

-         press backward + B4 to jump to the first slope

-         when you touch the slope immediately press B4 to jump to the second slope

-         touching this slope press B4 to jump to the rotated pole

The pole will position itself again parallel to the niche with the artifact.

Jump from the slopes to the pole in front of the niche

Swing/jump to the niche and take the Artifact.

Lower from the slope and return to pad # 3. Jump up twice but this time shimmy around the right corner and jump one ledge higher. Jump backwards to the ledge in the corner rock and shimmy around the corner to the ledge in the wall. Jump sideways to the right ledge and drop down one ledge. Shimmy all around the rock and notice a grapple ring on the wall. Jump/grapple backwards and at the end lose the Grapple. You’ll end up on a ledge in a rock. Shimmy around until the middle and jump backwards to a pole. The pole will rotate parallel to a niche with a Large Medipack and a pushbutton. Take the Medipack and push the button that will rotate another pole.
Face the rock with the green hand grips and jump to it. Climb down and drop to the floor avoiding getting hurt.

Return again to pad # 3 and follow the same trajectory, but this time stop at the second ledge on the wall and don’t drop down to the one that is under you. Jump backwards to the pole that just turned. Swing/jump to the next pole and position yourself in front of the blue hanging pillar (adjust the camera). Swing/jump to the pillar and grab it. Make a quarter turn so that your back is facing the second hanging pole and climb all the way up. Press B4 to jump to the second pole. Climb all the way up so you can see the platform on your right. Turn your back to the raised pillar in front of the platform and jump.
Standing on top of the pillar, face the platform exactly in front of you and jump to it. At the end is a shiny object.

You’ve found the Wrench

I thought I’d lost this.
Face the pillar with the green handles and climb down where you safely drop to the floor.
You’ve finished the Gym!

Now let's go to Croft Manor Part 2
