Part 2 – The Lava Pool
Return
to the control room (see Part 1). That’s funny, when standing on the ledge the
first crate is suspended again (a glitch?). When entering the room get a
CHECKPOINT.
Follow
the cart rails left to the second room. Get a CHECKPOINT when arriving there.
Standing next to the cart shoot all the windows in the room above. Jump to the
cart and turn right. Jump to what looks like a machine part and from there
prepare to jump to the room.

Prepare for entering the room
You’ll
be hanging from the floor’s edge. Pull up and go inside. This is another
control room with all kinds of buttons and meters. Push the green button at the
end and see how the machine block and the cart are moving to the right.

The button will move the cart and the machine
Return to the broken window and notice that the machine is actually a huge mine drill that is now on the rails instead of the cart. Jump to the drill and drop to the small platform on the back. Start the engine and the drill will run on the rails.

Ride the drill
The
ride ends where Larson will enter the scene once again. They argue over the fact
that these mines are property of JN and that Lara has no business there. Then
Lara points her guns at Larson. C’mon,
we both know you’re not going to kill me, that’s not in your nature. Lara
hesitates and Larson takes advantage of this and draws his shotgun and HE is
prepared to kill Lara.
Lara
suddenly gets enraged: I’m NOT who you
think I am.
An
interactive cut scene will start where you have to move your left control stick
in the direction as indicated by the arrows. Move 3 times upward in a row and
with each successful move you will hit Larson with your Pistols. He will be
lying down after the 3rd shot and die. Lara takes a Blue Fuse out of
his pocket and puts it in her inventory. Somehow she is remorseful and tries to
clean her hands... but Larson is dead. CHECKPOINT.

Kill Larson and take his Blue Fuse
Then
take Larson’s Shotgun. Fine, you have that one back too. CHECKPOINT. Notice a
suspended container blocking the rails.
Larson
had removed the Blue Fuse from the control shack in the previous room so you
have to return it there and lift up the container. Go left to the stairs and
enter. Get a CHECKPOINT when you are in front of the receptacle. Put in the Blue
Fuse and press the green button on the right. That will raise the container.

Raise the container
Return
to the drill and engage. After the curve to the left the drill will be able to
pass because you have raised the container that was standing on the rails.
Further on the drill will destroy some wooden planks and open the way to a lava
pool.

Opening the entrance to the lava pool
Step
off and follow the rails and overlook the lava pool. CHECKPOINT. There’s a
whole lot of ledges and slopes to see in this lava pool and you will have to get
to the opposite side where part of the broken rails are hanging down. Stand on
the left corner facing a pillar with a more or less flat top. Jump to the
pillar.

Position Lara for a jump to the pillar
Turn
around and notice a small I-shaped piece of iron sticking out of the lava and a
lower ledge on the left with shiny objects. Jump to the “I” and perch. Turn
to the ledge (hard to get in line) and jump to it. Take the Dual 50 Caliber
Pistols + extra Ammo: 30 Shells.

Get the 50’s first
Look
back at the “I” and notice a narrow ledge on a wooden construction above a
grated window with an “X”. Jump to the “I” and perch. Again, it is very
hard to get Lara facing the narrow ledge. But if you do, jump to it and hang
from the narrow ledge.

How to reach the narrow ledge
Shimmy
around the corner on your right and look backward to see a vertical pole. Jump
backward and grab the pole. Climb up until under the first ring and look to your
right to notice a higher I-shaped metal bar in the lava and a narrow ledge on top
of another grated window with an “X”. Face your back to the “I” and jump
backward to perch on it. Face the narrow ledge.

From the pole to the “I”
Jump
to the narrow ledge and shimmy around the left corner where you vault up to a
higher narrow ledge. Look backward to see a small platform on a pillar and jump
to it. From there you will see a blue circle indicating a grapple ring.
CHECKPOINT.

From the platform notice a blue sign
Look
carefully in front of you. There is a slope under the ledge with the grapple
ring and beyond that an I-shaped beam. But there is another “I” just beyond
the slope that you can’t see from here. You will notice it when you fall into
the lava on your first attempt – and you sure will.
You
want to jump to that hidden I-beam. So grapple on the ring and lower down until
right above the lava. Get Lara until she is just above her knees into the lava,
she won’t feel it (a tough lady!). Start swinging and at the highest peak on
the far end press and hold B4 to jump to the I-beam and perch. Face the second
I-beam and jump to it. Perch and face the ledge with the goodies.

Grapple jump and reach the second I-beam
Jump
to the ledge and listen to a chime. Take an Artifact and a Small Medipack.

Find an Artifact and a Small Medipack
Return to the I-beams and jump to the slope. Immediately press B4 to jump to the pole which will rotate left. You will then face another slope.

Reaching the rotating pole
You
will also notice a pillar on your right and if you look well there is a metal
narrow ledge on it facing the slope. Shimmy to the right (like in the
screenshot), swing/jump to the slope, slide down a bit and jump to the narrow
ledge. Vault up to the higher narrow ledge

Reaching the pillar with the narrow ledges from the slope
Vault up to the top of the pillar and pull up. Turn around and notice a blue sign indicating a grapple ring on the ceiling. On the opposite wall there is a ledge with two shiny objects. Grapple jump on the ring and swing/jump to an L-shaped narrow ledge above the ledge with the goodies (the ledge is a rail section).

Grapple jump to the narrow ledge
Drop
to the ledge and pick up two sets of Mini SMG Ammo and a Large Medipack.
From
the right corner of the ledge notice a blue circle around the grapple ring you
just used to get here. Grapple jump, hang from the chain and face the broken
rail in the tunnel and lower a bit. Start swinging and jump to the tunnel.

Reach the rails in the tunnel
Go in and turn right to your next CHECKPOINT. You will be in a rocky cavern with an opening above. There is a sloping rock. Jump to it and immediately when you slide down jump to the edge of a flat rock on the opposite side. Pull up and jump to a higher rock.

Start climbing the rocks from the slope
Turn
right and jump to the highest rock. Pull up and turn right. There is another
flat rock on the opposite side. Jump far to this rock and pull up. Turn back and
notice a slope on the opposite side in front of a full ledge. Jump to the slope,
slide down a little and jump to the ledge.

Jump to the rock and from the slope to the ledge
As
soon as you touch the ledge a cut scene will start where you will meet JN’s
two other goons again: the one-eyed bully with his knife and the colorful bean
stalk with his mini SMG’s.
After
a little conversation an interactive cut scene with arrows will start. In
between the 2nd and the 3rd arrow scene the bully will
stab the bean stalk (I don’t know why... ??).

The first two arrow scenes and the stabbing scene
After the 3rd arrow scene the bully is still not dead and grabs Lara by the throat to strangle her. But the bean stalk lying on the floor is still not dead either and shoots the bully.

The 3rd arrow scene and the killing of the bully
Then
the bean stalk dies himself from the stab wound. CHECKPOINT. You can take his
Mini SMG’s but I would strongly advice to postpone that. You will have
to do some serious acrobatics ahead from here until the end of the Sublevel
without a Checkpoint. I will tell when the moment will come to take his guns.
For the time being you don’t need them anyway.
See
the yellow-greenish crate on your left? Grab it and move it under the flat rock.
From the crate jump to the rock and pull up. Turn right and jump to a narrow
ledge.

Don’t take the guns for now but climb up
Vault
up to the higher ledge with the slope on the right side and pull up. Don’t use
the slope, but jump to the higher narrow ledge and shimmy around the corner on
your right. Prepare for a side jump to the ledge on your right.

Towards the ledge on your right
Turn
left and jump to the narrow ledge. Vault up to the top above and pull up.
Turn
right and have a look at the Pyramid below Lara.

Study the Pyramid from the top of the rocks
On
the opposite rock ledge you can spot a shiny object. Observe the flat triangles
protruding from the face of the Pyramid and notice that there are two kinds of
triangles: black triangles and triangles with a golden base and top decorated
with Hieroglyphs. You can count 6 of those.
Hang
from the ledge and notice an alcove below you that contains some goodies. Do not
drop down to take them yet but remember the spot for later.

Some goodies in an alcove below the top
Pull
up again and see the first two black triangles you will have to jump to and
perch. Jump to the first triangle and perch while you try to face the 2nd
one. It’s very hard to turn Lara in the direction you want and you have to
constantly be alert to restore her balance by pressing B1. But if she’s more
or less facing the next triangle you can jump.
Now
reach the 2nd triangle and try to face the 3rd. The first
three triangles are somewhat lined up.

Perching on the first two triangles
From
here you can see the route to follow. The 3rd triangle is in front of
you and the 4th slightly to the right of it.
This
one is in front of the 5th at the same height. Face Lara towards the
rock with the shiny object and jump to the 5th.
The
6th is on the left facing the 7th which is a golden
triangle at the same height.

Perching on the 4th, 5th and 6th
triangle
Have
a look at the last section of your route. The 8th and 9th
lead into the direction of the rock and the 10th is a golden triangle
facing the 9th at the same height and is right in front of the rock.
Now
jump to the golden triangle (#7) and a cut scene will follow showing a
Hieroglyph appearing on the bottom door of the Pyramid. When the scene ends, the
golden triangle will immediately start lowering. Quickly jump to #8. If you jump
too late or miss your jump you will have to start all over again from the
previous Checkpoint because the golden triangle will have sunk into the Pyramid
and you won’t be able to reach the rock any longer. Reload from that
Checkpoint, push the crate below the flat rock and climb up to the top again.
Then retry until you reach the 8th and 9th triangles.

Reaching triangle #9
Jump
to the golden triangle which is #10 and immediately to the narrow ledge on the
rock. As soon as you touch the golden triangle it will lower into the
Pyramid’s face. You won’t see any cut scene after the first golden triangle
you touched and neither will you see the second Hieroglyph appearing on the
door. But after this second golden triangle there will be a second
Hieroglyph on the door. So now you know what these golden triangles are and what
they are standing for.
If
you miss the jump you will have to start all over again from the previous
Checkpoint just like with the first golden triangle.
On
the screenshot notice a Medipack lying below in the corner and also another
golden triangle below on your right. Remember this triangle for later. When you
reach the narrow ledge shimmy around the two corners to your right and side jump
to a ledge on your right.

The ledge is on the back of the rock
Jump
to a small rock in the corner and from there to the top ledge, pull up and take
Artifact #4.

Take the artifact
Look
down and notice the golden triangle I just told you about. Face it and jump to
it so it will also lower. Now you may slide down from the Pyramid to the floor
and take no harm.
You’ve
got 3/6 golden triangles lowered now and 3 Hieroglyphs should be on the door.
First
let’s go for that Medipack that you saw in the corner. Push the second yellow
greenish crate in front of the backside of the rock and climb your way up all
around the corner to the front side near the Pyramid where you can jump to the
ledge and take the Large Medipack.

From the crate to the Large Medipack
Now
it’s time for another trip to the top past the first crate and get those
goodies in the alcove below. Drop down from the ledge. Jump to the Pyramid and
immediately press B4 to jump to the edge of the alcove.
Pull
up and take two packs of Mini SMG Ammo (each pack contains 25 Shells) and a
Large Medipack.
Hang
from the ledge and drop to the lower ledge.

Pick up the goodies and drop to the lower ledge
Jump
to the Pyramid and slide down. Now go to the dead bean stalk who is lying in
front of the door and take his SMG’s. You get a good CHECKPOINT here with all
of the goodies in your pocket.
All
you have to do now is lower 3 more golden triangles. The easiest way to do this
is making three round trips from the top and each time reach one golden
triangle. Always jump to the 1st triangle and select a route to your
next golden triangle, then slide down.
When
all 6 are lowered you will see the 6 Hieroglyphs on the door and above the
alcove in the middle of the face. Also a Y-shaped lit beam is decorating the
Pyramid.

6 Hieroglyphs and a lit “Y”
Now
you have to make a last trip from the top. Jump your way into the direction of
the rock, turn left and jump into the direction of the center of the “Y”.
Jump from the last triangle into the alcove where there is a golden wall lever.

The last two triangles and the lever
Pull
the lever and view a cut scene where all 6 golden triangles will rise again. The
door will now rise and give access to the inside of the Pyramid.

The golden triangles and the door are rising
Get
your completion window of this Sublevel.

Now
let's go to Sublevel 4.2: The Great Pyramid, Part 1 - Ledges over Lava
