Level 2: Greece

Sublevel 3: Midas’s Palace

Part 1: The Spear Room and the Column Room

The armless statue you see in front of you is actually that of King Midas whose finger turned everything he touched into Gold. Also his food... and that is how he died. It’s ancient Greek Mythology, of course such a King has never existed in the real world.
Remember that because his right hand is lying on a pedestal and his left hand on the raised floor on which his throne is standing. Make sure you do not touch his hands or you may get Lara turned into Gold!

Meet King Midas

Lara in gold

Proceed to the stairs and 3 Gorillas will attack you. There is a pool in front of the statue so run/roll around it and jump to the elevated floor of the statue where the Gorillas can’t harm you. Shoot them one by one from here. You can use the Dual 50 Caliber Pistols if you like, or just the usual Dual Pistols.

Three more Gorillas dead (how many still survive?)

Notice a Gold bar in one of the four rectangles.

Only one Gold bar, the other rectangles are empty

Jump to the floor and go to the left part of the entrance where you will see a low block under some vines. Jump to the block, turn left and jump to the fountain.

Jump to the platform of the fountain from the low block

There is a ledge on your right you can jump to. Vault up to the higher ledge.

Jump to the ledge from this point and vault up

Shimmy left around the corner and pass on the right of the pool to find a Large Medipack in the corner.
Proceed to the pedestal holding a lever and pull it. CHECKPOINT.
A door on the right side of the entrance will then slide upward.

The lever triggers a lower door

Return to the floor the same way you moved up and enter the door you just opened.
Go left or right of the central support and ascend the stairs. Go up the stairs on your right side, turn left with more stairs and reach a room on your left. CHECKPOINT.
This room is weird: full of spears in pots. Notice a lever on top of a ledge. There is also a shiny object in an alcove and a grapple ring attached to a white block on a ledge. This looks all very promising...

The room with spears and a lever

Grapple the ring and pull down the white blocks. When they fall down, they will vanish and the alcove will be empty.

Pull out the white blocks

There is some Shotgun Ammo behind one of the grey blocks on the floor.

Shotgun Ammo... if you need some

Enter the hallway opposite the entrance and go behind the stairs on your left where you’ll find a moveable crate. Pull back the crate, go behind and enter an alcove with a lever. Pull the lever that will lift the gate on top of the stairs on your left.

Pull out the crate and open the door with the lever

Before going up the stairs, push the crate in between where the Shotgun Shells are and the slope on the left in the previous room. We shall have to adjust its correct position later on, but this way it is near to the correct position.

Push the crate here

Return to the stairs, go up and turn right to pick up a Small Medipack. Turn around and go up the next set of stairs.
Left you’ll find the lever that will raise all pillars in the spike room. CHECKPOINT.

Pull the lever and raise the pillars

Jump to the first flat pillar. As soon as you’re on it, it will lower down. Lara really should lose some weight and we know where that weight is concentrated...
Turn left and jump to the left pillar with the spikes which you will hang down from. This pillar is stable. Shimmy to the right all around the two corners and jump to the slope. When you are sliding down jump to the opposite protruding ledge. This will start retracting into the wall as soon as you hang from it.
Pull up, turn right and focus Lara on the opposite higher spiked column that has a narrow ledge to jump to.

A series of jumps to the narrow ledge

Vault up to the ledge with the spikes and shimmy right around two corners (but stay close to the second corner) where you can make a backward jump to the opposite flat pillar. Jump to the opposite pillar with the slope and from here to the protruding ledge that will start retracting too. Pull up and turn right. Jump to the lower flat-topped pillar that has already started to lower. Turn left and jump to the alcove in the wall.

A very difficult series of fast moves

Pull up and take the Artifact in the alcove. Walk to the edge, look down and drop down making sure you won’t land in some cluster of spikes.

Drop down from here

Now repeat the sequence you just did to find the Artifact. This time jump to the left protruding ledge instead of the lower pillar (that was in front of the alcove). Turn left and jump to the opposite spiked pillar.

Here is where you turn left

Shimmy left around the two corners of the spiked pillar and jump backward to the narrow ledge in the flat column. Vault up because it is already lowering, pull up and jump to the alcove with the shiny object.

Reaching the ledge of the alcove

Pull up and collect the Lead Bar. CHECKPOINT.

You’ve found the Lead Bar

All the columns will retract into the floor now. Jump down and return to the stairs in the next room and pull the lever again to raise the columns. Drop down and adjust the positioning of the crate you pushed in before. It should stand near the broken part of the column with a slope on top.

Adjust the crate under the column with the slope

The reason for this position is preventing the pillar from lowering down with your next move.  Run up the stairs again and repeat your previous acrobatic sequence but instead of jumping to the alcove on the right (with the Lead Bar), jump to the left protruding ledge, turn left, and jump to a narrow ledge on the opposite pillar. Quickly jump up to the top (it will lower down) and from there jump to the pillar with the broken part that is now blocked by the crate you’ve just positioned underneath. This pillar has a slope on top. Slide down and jump to another alcove. However, that is a very tricky move and you will repeatedly jump left or right of that pillar crashing down to the floor. The reason is that you can’t focus your camera view. It took me over 20 trials to get on that sloping ledge, but then again, I’m a very clumsy player and you guys should be much better (hopefully). When you reach the alcove ledge jumping from the slope pull up and turn behind the rubbish lying in the alcove where you will find a Relic.
Collect the Athenian Owl Figurine: the sacred Bird of the Goddess Athena. Owls were associated with her characteristic trait of wisdom.

You’ve found the Athenian Owl Figurine

CHECKPOINT.

Drop down to the floor. All the pillars will sink into the floor again and your business is finished here. Return to the Midas’s statue room. You’ll get another CHECKPOINT when leaving here. When you reach the large dividing block from the stairs 2 gorillas will attack. Immediately run/roll past either side of the block and run through the entrance to Midas’s room (CHECKPOINT) and keep running/rolling to the statue. Jump to the pedestal and shoot one Gorilla safely from here (just use your Dual Pistols). The Gorilla will always change position but you can still hit him. He’ll lie down after about 20 shots.

Shoot the first Gorilla

To lure the 2nd Gorilla hang down from the pedestal and pull up again. He’ll come standing under you, so finish him off the same way.

Now the coast is safe here and you may jump down. Climb to a higher flat part left of the statue and notice the narrow ledges on Midas’s chair. Jump back to the pedestal and climb the first one. Make a left sideward jump to the second one and vault up to the upper ledge. Pull up and turn left where you can vault to a platform with a pool of water. Go behind the statue and notice Shotgun Ammo lying on the platform above the lever. Get it if you have room.  Pulling the lever will raise the gate at the other side of the statue.

Make your way up to the lever that opens the other gate

Drop down to the left side of the statue (from your point of view) and run to the opened gate (CHECKPOINT).

Drop down from here (and take a little damage)

Enter the walkway. Also here is a central block where you can go left or right. Take either way and go up the stairs, turn left for more stairs and then right for your 3rd staircase. Turn right (CHECKPOINT) and enter the room. A short cut scene will show you a shiny object on the big central column in front of you and there is a 4th staircase on your right. Go up these stairs, turn left twice and then right, until you see the room from above. Warning: 4 bats will attack when you reach the ledge, so shoot these guys and then have a look down below.

Go look at the room from above

Hang from the ledge and drop down. Run to the hallway in the far left corner. Turn left-right-right until you reach a staircase going down.

When you run down and turn right a Gorilla and a Lion will appear from the basement. Immediately run up backward on the stairs while constantly shooting them.  Now you will move sideways up and down the stairs. They won’t follow you on the stairs. Then you’ll have to lure them out again by running down and turning right. Repeat this tactic for a few times and they’ll both be shot dead and no harm has been done to Lara. That’s the way we like it.

The basement has a peculiar central structure with a central crumbling column (the one going up to the first floor with the shiny object) supported by 3 wooden beams each holding a grapple ring. Grapple each ring and pull the support down until the whole supporting structure is destroyed.

One of the supports with a ring

Something has fallen down to one of the corners of the column’s base. Collect the Lead Bar that fell from the first floor.

You’ve found the Lead Bar

Leave this room the way you came in by the staircase and turn left-left-right. A pile of sand is blocking your way on the first floor now.

A huge pile of sand in your way

This was caused by removing the support beams of the column. Go right through the hallway and ascend the stairs you did before when you shot the 4 bats. Turn left and find some Shotgun Ammo in the corner. Turn around and then you’ll arrive by the edge (CHECKPOINT). Overlook the room from above again: everything looks awful and destroyed.
Look left and notice two narrow ledges higher up on the wall and a dangling rope in front of the second ledge. Remember the position of this rope.

Notice two narrow ledges high up the left wall and a dangling rope

Turn right and from the corner of the ledge jump to a rock in the sand. Pull up and from this rock you can jump up to two more rocks. From the last rock jump to a narrow ledge and then sideward to a ledge on your left where a Large Medipack is lying.

Climb all the way up

Pull up and take the Medipack.

Hang from the ledge on the right side, let go and land on one of the rocks you just climbed. This time return to the narrow ledge and side jump to a narrow ledge on the corner wall on your right. Shimmy all the way to the right and notice a snake-shaped grapple hook higher on the wall to your right.

Side jump from the narrow ledge

Grapple jump and hang from the chain, from where you will see the two narrow ledges and the dangling rope again.

The two narrow ledges and the rope viewed from another angle

From this point of view keep swinging and when you’re high enough jump to the lower narrow ledge. Shimmy right and side jump to the higher ledge. Shimmy to the far right and hang in front of the dangling rope. Jump backwards to the rope.

How to reach the rope

Turn left to the column with the crevices and swing to it. You may end up on the highest crevice (if not vault up to the highest) and will notice a ledge on your left. Jump backward to the ledge and as soon as you hang from the ledge you’ll get a CHECKPOINT.

Rope – Column – Ledge

Pull up and turn left to notice the whitish column with a slope on top. Adjust the camera behind Lara and let her face the column.

Stand near the corner and face the sloped column

Behind this column you may also notice a lower broken column. Jump to the first column (keep holding B4 to prolong your jump), slide down a little and press B4 to jump to the small broken column.

On the lower column

Notice a crevice in the column on your left. Jump to it and shimmy all the way to your right. Jump backward to the ledge and carefully walk until you’re under the first narrow ledge on the wall. Jump up, shimmy right and vault up to the higher narrow ledge. Shimmy right and side jump to the flat top of the column on your right. Vault up to the higher platform. Turn right and notice the blue sign on the snake-shaped grapple hook. Grapple jump and hang from your chain. From this point of view you can spot a Small Medipack in the alcove on your right. That is where you’re heading. Lower Lara just above the entrance. Start swinging from left to the right and when you’re high enough just before reaching the return point of your swing, press B7 to see her again from the back and immediately press backward + B4 (like in the Gym). You’ll end up on a flat top. Turn to the alcove and jump to the edge. Pull up and take the Small Medipack.

How to reach the alcove with the Medipack

Jump back to the flat top and back to the broken pillar from where you started your quest to the Medipack. Jump to the next broken column and then to the balcony of the entrance.

Reach the entrance

Follow the hallway: right-left-right-right-left.

When passing this point a Gorilla will appear

When the Gorilla attacks run backward through the entire hallway while constantly shooting. If you keep going the same way (but backwards) you’ll have him down in no time. Turn back and repeat with the second Gorilla.
Return and meet the pool left of Midas. Left of the pool is a lever. To the left of the lever find some Dual 50 Caliber Pistols Ammo. Pull the lever that will open a gate behind Midas. (CHECKPOINT).

Now let's go to Sublevel 3: Midas's Palace - Part 2, The Fire Room
