Part 3: Descending the Shaft again

Jump back to the U-shaped top and go right, to the end where you can jump to the extended ledge. You’ve done this before.
Jump to the narrow ledge on your right.

Jump to the extended ledge and to the narrow ledge from this position

Drop down to a full ledge, hang down and shimmy around the corner to the right and drop down to the lower narrow ledge.
Shimmy to the right around the corner and notice a slope under you going down. Let go to the slope and when you touch it press B4 to jump to the opposite narrow ledge. Shimmy around the left corner and pull up to enter the Atlas door.

Reaching the Atlas door

Go inside for a CHECKPOINT. Run inside, go left and find a door with a central ledge and a lever on the right. Something you recognize?  Pull the lever and ride the door to the hole in the wall. On the opposite side let go and drop to the floor (via the narrow door ledge) and follow the hallway left and right to the next CHECKPOINT.

Enter a ledge with two handles on a pedestal.
Behind the pedestal there is a pit you can’t jump over. So what to do? Obviously you have to turn the mechanism, so grab one of the handles and turn it around until the pit is covered by two plates.

Start turning the pedestal around

However, when you let go of the handle the pedestal will start turning backwards and both plates will retract.
Try again, but this time when the plates have closed let go of the handle and run/jump over the plates, running farther until you reach the opposite side of the pit.
Run up the ramp leading to a burning Atlas statue carrying the world. But the spears prevent you from picking up the ammo and a shiny object in the alcove behind them.

Two rows of spears in front of Atlas

First turn back and notice a tiny narrow ledge on your right. Jump up, shimmy left and make a side jump to the left ledge. Shimmy left and vault up to the platform where something shiny is lying.

Notice the ammo and a lever on the left lower platform

Pull up and collect a pack of 50 Caliber Pistol Ammo.
Jump down from the left side to a lower ledge where you can pull the lever that will trigger two opposite horizontal poles to emerge, forming a bar above the pit. CHECKPOINT.

The two poles form a bar

Turn left and notice two objects on the opposite ledges and a lever on the wall. The jump is too far, so return down to the slope from where you can climb up to the ledges. However don’t do that right now.
Left and right of Atlas there are circular targets you can shoot. Shoot the left one and Atlas will politely bow a little bit whereas the first row of spears will retract.

Now you can “feel” if you shoot the right target Atlas will bow more in his polite way and release the globe. Meaning: you’ll have to run away from it when it rolls down from the slope aiming to squish you. So have a look around where a safe spot could be. That would be the pole you‘d have to jump to from the edge of the pit at the end of the slope.
Return to Atlas and stand close enough to shoot the right target. The sphere will roll down from the slope.
Immediately turn around (the camera will stay in front of you) and press backward to run down to the edge.

Time for some quick action now!

Jump to the pole but keep pressing backward so Lara will swing. The Globe will touch the pole, destroy it and tumble down into the pit, whereas Lara will end up on the other side.

Repeat turning the pedestal by one of the handles and jump back over the plates. Also now the second row of spears has retracted and you can collect the Shotgun Shells (if you have less than 40) and go into the alcove and take the Key of Atlas.

You’ve found the Key of Atlas

CHECKPOINT.  Turn around and now you have to go for those two things you saw before on the left ledge. So go to the broken column and jump up from the right side.

The column is tricky to jump up to

Vault up to the platform, pull up and collect a Small Medipack. Jump to the higher ledge, pull up and collect an Artifact behind the rock.

A Small Medipack and an Artifact

Go down and pull the lever that will close the plates above the pit. Drop down and quickly jump over before they will open again. Return to the gate with the narrow ledge and the lever to the right. As usually pull the lever and grab the ledge to go up with the gate. But the gate won’t lower so you’ll have to jump backward to a pole.

First a jump to the pole

Turn around hanging from the pole and swing/jump to the opening where you pull up. Drop down from the other side and get a CHECKPOINT when nearing the door of Atlas. Walk out and the ledge under the door will emerge automatically.
Go to the end of the protruding ledge and turn around facing the Atlas entrance again. Notice a long narrow ledge under the Atlas floor.
Hang down from the right side of the floor and jump down to this narrow ledge. Shimmy all the way to your left and prepare for a left sideward jump to the next narrow ledge.

The narrow ledge under the Atlas entrance

To the left narrow ledge

Shimmy to the left and jump backward to a pole. Swing/jump to a ledge and notice an Artifact on a higher ledge.

Swing/jump from the pole

Jump to the ledge and collect the Artifact.

The Artifact you saw before

Don’t bother returning to the pole because it is a very tricky jump. Just jump down and die. You’ll be back at the Checkpoint having your 5th Artifact.
Watch the ledge slide out again and jump to the opposite platform in the central structure of the Shaft. Pull up.

Pull up to the opposite platform

Climb up to the piece of rock in front of you and jump up left to the narrow ledge where you shimmy around the right corner.

The rock and the narrow ledge

Drop down to a (much) lower narrow ledge (Press B1 when hanging down with one hand). Drop down to the lower narrow ledge and shimmy left around the corner where you drop down to the platform below.

How to drop down to the lower platform in steps

Turn around and jump to the lower platform on a pillar.

Jump to the broken platform on a pillar

Go to the corner and jump to the lower platform between two pillars and pull up. You’re above the Damocles Room now. Face the entrance and use the grapple to pull out a pillar from the wall, just above the Damocles room.

Jump to the platform from this corner and pull out the pillar

The pillar’s end will drop down to this platform. Climb up and walk to the other side. In the middle look at your right and notice a Small Medipack lying on a ledge. Also notice two metal grated boxes.

View from the middle of the fallen pillar

Climb up the ledge on your right. Walk to the metal box and see an exclamation sign. Grab the box and pull it out. Hang down from the ledge and make a lateral side jump to the right narrow ledge.

Pull out the box so you can jump to the other side

Shimmy to the right. Drop down and collect the Small Medipack.
Jump up again to the ledge you came from and return to the fallen colums the opposite way. This time jump to the left ledge, pull up and push the other metal box to the left side.

Pull up and push the other metal box to the left side

The reason for this is to make a hold for Lara's leg so she will be able to make a sideward jump soon.
Turn around and jump to the opposite ledge (with the box on the right side) and climb up to the box. Turn around and jump to the narrow ledge on the opposite wall. Shimmy all the way around the corner on your left. Drop down to the lower narrow ledge and notice another Small Medipack on a lower ledge on your left.

This is why you had to move the box

Shimmy left and jump to the corner narrow ledge. Shimmy right around the corner and let go to a lower narrow ledge. Drop down to the ledge and collect the Small Medipack.

How find your way to another Small Medipack

Hang from this ledge and drop down to the narrow ledge underneath. Shimmy around the right corner and drop down to the lower ledge left of Damocles’ entrance.

Reach the entrance of Damocles’ room

Slide from a small slope to the entrance of Damocles. Go in and get a CHECKPOINT. Run into the hallway, turn left and see your usual gate (with the middle narrow ledge) and the lever. Pull the lever. The door will immediately drop down again. So they’re making this trick a bit more difficult. Look up and all around you. There is a block with a brass grapple ring on top of the door. Manually aim to the ring and pull the block out (if you don’t do it manually you will grapple the lower part of the block so it would fall out on the wrong face).

Grapple to the ring and pull the block out

Now the other ring is on top of the block when lying on the floor. That is very important because the block is higher. Push the block close to the gate (but not touching the gate).
Pull the lever and when the door rises quickly push the block under the gate preventing it from closing all the way down.
Climb up the block, jump up to the narrow ledge of the gate and vault up to the opening in the wall.

Get your way up to the opening

Pull up and drop down from the other side. Go right and step on a pressure pad that will open the gate behind it.

Open an entrance to a huge room

Now enter this fantastic room with pillars, and proceed past the red and white tiles. You will cross some traps that aren’t functional yet. But just keep it in mind.

Traps that aren’t functioning yet

Enter the next (and last) room and notice a pedestal with a shiny object. Before collecting it, explore this room. Behind the last column on your right you’ll find a Small Medipack and in front of the middle column by the wall some 50 Caliber Pistol Ammo. You can carry 120 shells tops, remember that.
Look up above the pedestal and see a circle of swords hanging right above the object. You can “feel” that this deadly set of swords will drop down as soon as you take the object from its pedestal. The Sword of Damocles – so to say. But these are a whole ring of giant swords!
Step on the pedestal and face the entrance to this room.

Stand here and collect the Key of Damocles

When you press B4 to continue, immediately run to the entrance avoiding the falling swords. Watch a cut scene where the EXIT door is closing while a bunch of traps on the tiles and the ceiling are becoming active. CHECKPOINT.

Hell breaks loose in there

Turn the camera view to Lara’s back and slowly walk through the entrance to the pillar room.

From here turn the camera to Lara’s back

When you go out the first giant sword will drop down in front of you. There are swords going up and down on all of the red and white tiles. So that’s not a good way out to get out of there for the time being.

Instead run back to the far wall of the Key room and notice how a ramp has appeared there. It is part of an upper walkway that broke down when the swords of Damocles fell down.  Run up the ramp and at the edge notice a blue grapple ring pointing upwards. Look up and see the ring. Jump upward from the edge and press B2 to grapple on the ring and hang down from your chain.

A new ramp at the end wall

Hanging from there look left and right and notice an L-shaped ledge on each pillar in the corner.

Hanging from the chain

Go left then right until you are high enough to jump to either of both ledges. Say we take the ledge on the right corner. Pull up and turn around the corner to notice a U-shaped walkway in the middle of this room, supported by columns. Jump from the corner to the opposite corner of the U-shaped ledge.

Reach a U-shaped walkway

The right leg of the “U” is shorter and a there is a ledge opposite on a column. Jump to that ledge and notice a lever on the opposite alcove. Jump into the alcove and pull the lever. This will cause the swords on a red tile in the next room to permanently retract into the floor. CHECKPOINT.

Make your way to the lever and pull it

Notice there is a Large Medipack behind the bars and remember this spot. Drop down to the floor and walk out (CHECKPOINT) to the right of the fallen sword, turn around the corner until one tile with swords will stop you.
Carefully study the pattern of how the swords will rise and retract. Your goal is to step on bordering tiles when the swords are in the floor.

  1. Step on the white tile in the corner when they have retracted and wait for the red tile in front of you to become safe.
  2. The red tile in front of you.
  3. Immediately run left to the white tile in front of a column.
  4. Run right to the red tile and immediately right to the white tile where you keep running forward until you passed the trap.

The way to get out without damage

Slowly keep walking left and a 2nd giant sword will drop down. Look up and see 5 more of these buggers hanging from the ceiling: left, middle, left, right, left. So more or less make it to the opposite corner remembering their position. Keep walking very slowly.

Giant Swords dropping down

Pass the corner on your left and notice the red tile where the lever has flatten the swords.

The lever eliminated the swords of this tile

Walk to the end corner passing the red tile and turn left to notice a chopped off pillar base. Turn around and jump to the narrow ledge on the wall. Shimmy left and vault up to the higher narrow ledge. Shimmy around the left corner and pull up to another alcove with a lever.

The way up to the first lever

Pulling the lever will cause the sword of a white tile to retract in the other room. Remember the Artifact behind the bars?
CHECKPOINT.

This tile is safe from swords popping up

Hang from the ledge and drop down. Turn around the trap room and notice that the white tile where the swords stopped you before are now exterminated by the second lever.

This white tile is safe now

You can enter the Key room (CHECKPOINT), ascend the ramp and go to the central U again with the grapple (like you did before). Jump from the left leg of the U to the alcove where the swords have now retracted and collect the last Artifact. CHECKPOINT.

Jump into the alcove and retrieve an Artifact

Hang and drop down. Return to the trap room and when you pass the opening get another CHECKPOINT. Go right all the way around to the 2nd chopped column. Jump up and make your way along the narrow ledges into the alcove with the first lever like you did before.
Grab the vertical pole on your left and climb up. Jump backward to the ledge on the column behind you. Pull up, turn right and stand in the middle of the ledge to jump to the second column’s ledge.

Up to the second ledge

From here you see the Large Medipack whose location in the alcove you remembered. Jump to the vertical pole near the alcove and slide down into the alcove. Collect the Medipack.
Hang down from the ledge and jump to the cornering narrow ledge.

From the alcove with the Medipack to the corner narrow ledge

Vault up one higher ledge and shimmy to the left where the camera will turn and show you a snake shaped grapple hook higher up on your left. Grapple jump to the hook and hang from the chain. Lower from the chain so that Lara’s feet are touching the lower frame of the wall decoration.

Hang down from this position

Now you remember how got the Artifact in the Mansion’s gym? This is the same tricky tactic. Position the camera in front of the wall and start swinging from the left to the right. When at the highest point on the left side press B7 to see her from the back again and then press backward + B4. Lara will jump to the opposite ledge on a column.

From this point jump backward to the ledge

Pull up and turn right. There is an alcove with a pedestal with two handles (like the one in the Atlas room). However, do not jump to the alcove from here because it is too far away. Turn left and from the middle of the ledge jump to the opposite ledge on a column. Then jump to the column without a ledge and to the opposite ledge on a column near the wall – they are all in a row. From the corner of the last ledge jump to the narrow ledge slightly on your right.

Face the narrow ledge from the corner of the third column’s ledge and jump to it

From there make a lateral jump to the narrow ledge in the corner and shimmy right. Side jump past the broken part to the narrow ledge on your right and shimmy to the right around the corner. Side jump from there into the alcove.

The way to get into the alcove with the pedestal

Grab one of the handles and start turning the pedestal as far as it goes. This will open the EXIT door beneath you. Also here, as soon as you let go of the handle the pedestal will turn backwards slowly closing the door. So quickly hang from the ledge and run through the already closing door. CHECKPOINT.

Open the EXIT gate and run through

Follow the hallway left to the well know door system with a central narrow ledge and a lever to the right. Pull the lever and see the block with the golden rings on the other side. Don’t go inside but let the door close again.
Pull the lever and jump to the narrow ledge. Ride and jump in the usual way to the hole in the wall. Pull up and jump down from the other side. Run through the hallway to your right and when reaching the Damocles door the ledge under the floor will protrude automatically. CHECKPOINT.
You are in the Shaft again. There is an opposite platform in between two pillars of the central structure but it is too far away to jump to.
Hang from the protruding ledge which is right above the Atlas lever alcove and drop down.

Drop down to the Atlas lever alcove

Go down from the stairs to the floor of the Shaft and face the door with 4 locks in between colored candles.
There are 4 of them. Place the Atlas key into the green candle (on the right side of the gate) and the lower lock will slide away. CHECKPOINT. Go left to the red candles and place the Key of Damocles in there. The second lock from below will slide away. CHECKPOINT. Place the Key of Hephaestus into the purple candles and watch the third lock from below slide away. CHECKPOINT. Go left and place the Key of Poseidon into the turquoise candles. The upper lock will slide away and the EXIT gate will open.

The gate will open
