Part
1 – The Scarab Mechanism
Walk
up the stairs past the opened gates and 2 Mummies will suddenly attack Lara. Run
backward while shooting to get them back into their coffins – no harm done.

Get rid of these Mummies
Return
up the stairs to a room with 4 Obelisks on top of cylindrical pedestals with
handholds. Explore the room and find a Small Medipack and Shotgun Ammo behind
the rear Obelisks.
Now
observe the cylinders: each contains 4 paintings of a person holding a different
object in the hand: a pot, a statue, two upside down cups and a green beer glass
(that’s how they look to me). They’re all orientated alike now, but you will
have to turn them into the correct positions.
Hint:
adjacent cylinders have to face a matching painting. This is a trial and error
puzzle, especially since rotating one cylinder will also cause other cylinders
to rotate and neither do the wall paintings give any clue. Every Tomb Raider
game has one of these treacherous puzzles.
So,
when turning the cylinders write down what you did in the correct sequence in
order to turn them back into their original position in case you’ve lost
track, rather than starting from the Checkpoint and facing those darn Mummies
again.
The
correct solution is like the screenshot. A pillar will then rise in the middle
square. CHECKPOINT.

Adjusting the 4 Obelisk
pedestals
Jump
from the narrow ledge of the pillar to the top. Look up and notice a number of
narrow ledges and a ladder.

On top you’ll see narrow ledges and a ladder
You’ll have to reach the ladder from the narrow ledges. Jump to the first one in front of you and shimmy left until you are under the small leg of the higher one, and vault up. Shimmy left around the corner and vault up to the 3rd narrow ledge. Shimmy left around the corner and vault up to the higher one. Jump backward to the ladder and climb to the top.

Reaching the top
Go
right-left-left and get your next CHECKPOINT. You are standing in front of a
double door trap. Pass the doors and notice a ledge on your left and two narrow
ledges further on the left wall.
Stand
like in the screenshot and when the doors are about to open jump to the ledge
and immediately to the lower narrow ledge. Vault up to the higher narrow ledge
and notice a second double door trap and a wall Scarab in front of it. As
always, the Scarab holds a narrow ledge. On the opposite wall there is another
Scarab (with narrow ledge) under a stable ledge. Shimmy to the right and prepare
for some fast moves.

Reaching the higher narrow ledge past the 1st doors
When
reaching the Scarab jump backward to the other Scarab and immediately vault up
to the higher and stable narrow ledge before the Beetle lowers down.

Hanging from the stable ledge above the Scarab
Look
to your left: past the second door trap there is a narrow ledge. Shimmy left and
prepare for a side jump to the narrow ledge. When the doors are open you can
safely jump.

Reach the narrow ledge behind the 2nd door trap
Shimmy
a bit to the left and look backward to notice a ledge. Jump backward to the
ledge. Go right and get a CHECKPOINT behind the head of a giant Sphinx.

You’ve past some hard traps here
The
room is big and complicated. Stairs leading up on your left and right to wall
levers that are beyond reach, and a ladder going down left and right of the
ledge you arrived at. The only thing to do is go down from one of the ladders.
Say you choose the ladder on your right. You arrive at a ledge with another
ladder and from this ledge you can hear the chirping sound of rats down below.
Descend this ladder and turn left around the corner to get a cut scene showing
you two rats on the stairs leading to this impressive Sphinx.
Immediately
after the cinematic the rats will attack, so quickly shoot them.

Explore
the entire floor and find some Shotgun Ammo and Dual 50 Caliber Pistols Ammo in
the right corner behind the Sphinx.
On
the opposite wall (in front of the Sphinx) some stairs are leading up to a
ladder. Climb the stairs and the ladder. Side jump to the left narrow ledge and
shimmy left. Side jump to the broken staircase on your left. Run/jump to the
next section of the stairs and get the CHECKPOINT.

To the broken staircase
Turn
right and climb a small block. Vault up to the higher ledge, pull up and jump to
the ledge on your left. Turn left (press B7 to view Lara from the back) to
notice a slope and a narrow ledge on the opposite wall leading to a full ledge
above. Slide down and about in the middle of your descent jump to the narrow
ledge. Vault up to the full ledge and pull up.

How to reach the opposite narrow ledge
Proceed
to a ramp going upward. At the end there is a gap between the ramp and the
opposite ledge where you can spot a staircase in the right wall and a wall
lever. Do not jump over because the gap is too wide. Turn left toward the Sphinx
and notice a column on your left with a crevice.

On top of the ramp
Jump
to the crevice and vault up to the higher crevice. Shimmy around to the other
side and vault up to a higher crevice. Turn
around to spot a crevice in the 2nd column.

Prepare for a jump to the 2nd column
Shimmy
around and look backward at the 3rd column. Jump backward to the
crevice and shimmy around. Look upward to see a higher crevice and 4 narrow
ledges on the wall. Jump to the higher crevice, shimmy around some 90 degrees
counter clockwise so that Lara’s back is facing the wall with the narrow
ledges.

Lara’s back has to face the wall
Jump
backward and grab the lowest of the narrow ledges. Vault up 3 times to reach the
4th narrow ledge and turn around to notice a full ledge behind
Lara’s back. Jump there. As soon as you hang from the ledge you will notice
how 2 flying monsters are heading towards Lara. Quickly pull up and shoot them
back to hell. Just use your Dual Shotguns while running backward and the job
will be done in no time.

Meet some flying monsters
On
the other side of this ledge you’ll see two poles. The ledge in front of them
has a slope. Slide down a bit and jump to the first pole.

Slide/jump to the first pole
Swing/jump
to the second pole and from there to the narrow ledge on the opposite wall.
Shimmy left around two corners to the opposite side and look backward to see a
ledge.

Prepare for a backward jump to the ledge
Run
to the other side and jump to a narrow ledge on the opposite wall. Drop down to
the lower narrow ledge above the lever and from there to the floor ledge.

Reach the ledge with the lever
Pulling
the lever will raise a block on your left side where some stairs are leading
down. CHECKPOINT.

The lever triggers a rising block
Don’t
go down yet but turn around and take the staircase on your left you just saw
from above. Follow the hallway left until you face a trap: two pairs of blocks
opening and closing. The first pair is full, but the second is only half,
meaning an upper part only. So when they close there is an opening under them.
When
the first pair is about to open jump past the gap and run/roll under the second
pair. Turn right-right to see a similar trap but this time with three pairs of
double blocks in a row. It is quite similar: the first pair of blocks is full
and the two others are halves.
When
the full blocks are about to open jump to the opposite ledge and duck to avoid
the second blocks closing above your head. When they open jump to the second
ledge and also duck. When the second pair of half blocks open jump to the
opposite ledge.
Continue
and reach a ledge overlooking a deep room with an upside down Obelisk hanging
from the ceiling. CHECKPOINT.

Past the traps to the deep room
Run
down the stairs and pull the wall lever that will lower the inverted Obelisk –
for a while. It will retract into the ceiling again... (???)

This lever doesn’t properly work
You
can try again but with the same result, so obviously we’ll have to find a
solution to this problem. Run up the stairs again and turn right to the corner
of the ledge. Position Lara such that she can jump to a narrow ledge on the left
wall. Then side jump to the right narrow ledge. You will notice two ladders on
your right of which the first is broken at the top.

Up to the 2nd narrow ledge
Side
jump to the 2nd ladder and climb down past the broken part of the
left ladder. Side jump to this ladder.
Climb
down to the next broken part and jump to the 2nd ladder. Climb down
from this ladder until you see a pole on your left. Notice that the pole has a
groove under its base meaning it is the kind of descending pole like you’ve
encountered before. Look left and notice that there are 4 such poles in a row
and a narrow ledge on the left wall past the 4th pole.

So
you will have to jump from pole to pole without swinging, meaning as soon as you
grab the first pole with left side jump from the ladder immediately press B4 to
continue to the next pole and repeat this until you grab that narrow ledge. If
you fail somewhere do not jump into the pool below but just restart from your
previous Checkpoint and try again.

The 4 poles on your left
If
you make it to the narrow ledge drop down to the wider narrow ledge above a
Scarab. Shimmy left and notice a long and narrow rectangular vertical frame on
the wall with two giant cogs on the side. In the frame there are a series of
decorated tablets all divided by a rectangular opening.
Prepare
for a left side jump to the top of one of these tablets.

Side jump to one of the tablets
You will grab the top of a tablet and hang from it (like from a narrow ledge). Lara’s weight will lower the frame, so you have to vault up from tablet to tablet until you reach the highest one in order to prevent her from ending up in the pool. When the frame has fully lowered two Scarabs will lock the big round button on top of the frame forming a ring around it. This will cause a ledge to protrude from a wall higher up, right above a grilled door.

A smart mechanism
Drop
into the pool and have a nice swim around. You’ll notice that the Obelisk
facing the Scarab mechanism has risen too. You’ll see 3 more of these
mechanisms. You can see the grilled door and a corner ledge where you can pull
up. The water is very clear, so first dive in and explore the bottom for
occasional goodies. Find a Small Medipack.

Pull
up to the ledge and stand in the corner of the small block facing another
sliding frame with tablets. Jump to the second tablet and vault up to the top
tablet while the frame is lowering. Again a Scarab mechanism will lock the
button above. You hear the sound of something moving. Drop to the ledge and turn
around to notice how the Obelisk facing the mechanism has risen too. Look up to
your left to notice how the ledge above the grilled door has extended more.

The second mechanism
Jump
to the narrow ledge on this Obelisk, vault up to the higher narrow ledge and up
to the top edge of the Obelisk (you will hang down from there). Look backward
and prepare for a jump to the ledge behind Lara.

From the top to the ledge
Pull up and from the right corner jump to the narrow ledge on the wall to your right. Shimmy right and prepare for a side jump to a tablet in the 3rd sliding frame on your right.

Up to the 3rd frame
Jump
up from tablet to tablet and again the Scarab mechanism will lock the upper
button. You’ll hear that sound again and now you will understand that the
ledge above you must have extended for a third time and also that the Obelisk
facing this mechanism must have risen.

Hanging from the upper panel
Drop
into the pool and return to the ledge. Climb the Obelisk again and shimmy around
the left corner. Prepare for a left side jump to the extended ledge and pull up.
You’ll see the last frame still to be lowered.

Reach the extended ledge
Walk
to the wall and turn right. A blue circle with an upward arrow will appear
meaning you can make a grapple jump to the opposite narrow ledge. Side jump
right to the fourth frame on your right and vault up until it locks. A cut scene
will show how the ledge above will fully extend forming a bridge from wall to
wall and all 4 Obelisks in the pool have risen now. Next the camera will focus
your attention to the wall lever that didn’t work before. It may work now?

All mechanisms activated
Look
behind you and notice you can jump to a narrow ledge on the Obelisk. Climb up,
shimmy around the corner and side jump to the bridge. Walk to the alcove with
the decorated panel and turn right. From here you will see the pair of broken
ladders and two descending poles to reach them (Lara has jumped from these poles
before). Jump to the first pole, immediately press B4, etc … (you know the
trick now) and reach the 2nd ladder. If you don’t make it drop into
the pool, swim to the ledge, climb the Obelisk and return to the bridge for the
next trial.

Reach the ladder from the bridge and the sinking poles
Climb
up and jump from broken ladder to ladder until you reach the top of the 2nd
ladder from where you can make a left side jump to the narrow ledge from where
you originally came. Side jump to the left narrow ledge and then to the top
ledge – the entrance to this room.

Returning to the entrance of this room
Run
down the stairs again and pull the lever. This time the upside down Obelisk will
permanently lower and a square edge Pyramid of light rays is formed whose
vertices constitute the tops of the 5 Obelisks. Moreover, the decorated panel in
the alcove at the end of the bridge appears to be a door that is now rising,
giving access to a shiny object on a pedestal. CHECKPOINT.

The door in the alcove opens up
Hang down from the middle of the ledge and drop to the bridge. Ouch! Run inside the opened room and a lightning bolt will hit Lara.

Enter the room at the end of the bridge
Then
a Mummy will appear from the right and the door closes behind Lara. You are
trapped with that horrific creature inside! Just keep running backward in
circles around the pedestal while shooting to get the Thing down. Take the Ankh
Key from the pedestal.
Immediately
the door will open again and the grilled door down below the bridge is opening
too. CHECKPOINT.
