THE WINDMILLS

The Entrance to the Tunnel to The Windmills is full of poles, rings and columns.
Make your way starting from the protruding beam to a column (with Elika’s help), two roof rings, a column and two roof rings to a ledge.

Prepare your circus acrobatics

Your first jump is to the column with Elika’s help

On the ledge

Prince: Ormazd can you hear us? I can’t see Ahriman wanting to build Windmills.
Elika: He didn’t, they were here before him.
Prince: Those Windmills don’t look a thousand years old.
Elika: After Ahriman was defeated the Ahura rebuilt them. They’ve fed the new City here ever since.

Jump past three poles to a second ledge.

Look at your next moves

Walk on the protruding narrow beam, jump past two poles up to wall ring with Elika’s help, and climb up past the ring to the covered ledge which I’ll call the Gazebo Platform. Save your Game at this Checkpoint.

Jump from the pole to the ring with Elika’s help

Climb up to the ledge by the ring

Left of you is a closed Gate.
Straightforward is the Tunnel leading to Martyr’s Tower beginning with two slopes leading to a ledge.
Right is a corner window above a red Power Plate.
(there is also a fourth entrance which can only be reached from another side).

Left: a closed gate

Front: two slopes to a ledge

Right: I thought we’d got these Plates working

Elika: We have. The Fertile Ground’s at the top of that Windmill. But we’ll have to go round the outside of it to get to the Plates.

Consult Elika for the path to follow and her Flare will show you the way passing the left side of the Plate. Turn to the Power Plate and descend the stairs. Jump up to the Plate.

Elika shows the way

Descend the staircase

Jump up to the Power Plate

Shoot off to a second Plate on the opposite side and continue your flight from there.

Shoot off from the Plate

Continue from the second Plate

Smash against a wall and automatically wall run to the left corner, press red at the ring, wall run further behind the corner and pass a second ring.

Start your wall to the left corner with the ring

Press red to turn around the corner

Press red to pass the second ring

End up on a third Power Plate. Launch from the Plate to a Tower with a Plate above a ring. Smash against the wall, climb up to the ring, and press red to climb further up to the fourth Power Plate.

Reach the third Plate and fly off

Climb up to a fourth Plate

Fly to a platform giving entrance to an opening in a Tower. Land on the platform and notice the lower part of a mechanism, a turning wooden column.

Fly away from the Plate

Approach a platform giving access to a Tower

Observe the base of a turning column inside the Tower

Prince: You know I once thought about settling down... milling flour for a living.
Elika: Really?
Prince: Ha, are you kidding? How boring would that be?

Walk inside to the end of this ledge and jump to the middle ledge with the mechanism.

Walk to the end of the ledge

Jump to the middle ledge

Pull up and notice there is a crank under a red Power plate on each side of the central column.

The right side

The left side

Elika: The Power Plates are behind those gears up there.
Prince: Cranks and gears... gears and cranks... Isn’t there just something we can hit to make it work?!
Elika: Why don’t you try moving those cranks?
Prince: Does it need many controls?
Elika: I think one gear turned the millstone, the other must have set how fine the flour was ground.

Is flour relevant now?

Elika: I think the one on the right moves the gears, the other... sets their timing.
Prince: Any more milling advice? What do I do to get a fluffy loaf?
Elika: I think one step ahead. You have the gears in position before you turn them into the final place.
Prince: Yeah, otherwise the flour might become out to coarse... I mean if we get a lumpy loaf we’re doomed, right?
Elika: Just turn the crank.
Prince: I can figure this out. Just... just give me a second. Are you sure there’s not something I can just... you know... hit?
Elika: Gears, cranks. One turns the other. One... does something else. It has to be to do with timing. We’ve got to get both gears to turn the right amount.
Prince: This is probably why we haven’t seen The Hunter. Can’t see him to figure this out.

Now you know that the right crank moves the gears and the left crank changes the speed. That’s not much of information to solve this puzzle, is it?
You can see that each of the gears has a hole that fits over a Power Plate. The left one is already in that position. Your goal is to turn them so that both Plates are accessible.

There are many ways of how to do this, and one takes longer than the other. If you do it randomly there are thousands of moves and suddenly the gears will stand in the correct position. The problem is, however, that you can’t reset unless you start over from the last Savegame – and that’s the Gazebo Platform.

The cranks can be turned clock- and counter-clockwise by pressing red and pulling/pushing around. Up in the middle are two panels that either show a blue bent arrow in either direction indicating a rotation through 90 degrees, a red bent arrow (indicating a half-turn) or just a void meaning that this gear is not moving when you manipulate the other crank.

Start with either crank and keep turning and running from one to the other until they’re eventually aligned. It takes a little thinking and a lot of luck because the whole puzzle system doesn’t make much sense to me.

Both gears are aligned

Elika: That’s it. Let’s get up there.
Prince: Gears and cranks. You know most of the Temples I’ve visited... had punji stakes, the occasional fake wall, maybe some Guards... you hit a few things and everything’s great.
Elika: Well, maybe the people that put this together wanted to make something that lasted, that did the job well.
Prince: Are Windmills a hobby of yours?
Elika: If you don’t understand how a City works you can’t help its people.
Prince: Hmm, spend your time making a Mill, saving, preparing... you might as well be between the millstones with like grinding you down. Patience is overrated.
Elika: And you never heard that good things are worth waiting for?
Prince: Good things are good things, why wait? Do you want to admire those mill workings a bit more, or should we climb the Tower? A bag of gold buys you a thousand bags of flour. What does that tell you?

Climb up to the left Power Plate and power jump to the Plate on the right.

From the left to the right Plate

Get shot away here to a wall where you start wall running to your right passing a ring to a third Plate higher up.

To the third Power Plate

Get fired off to a wall run landing on a ledge from where you see the construction at a higher level.

From the Plate to a ledge

Save your Game here (it is a Checkpoint).
Jump from pole to pole and get a side view. Perform a chimney jump to a higher ledge.

A side view from the Prince and Elika

Jump to the right wall and move up

Jump to the left wall and move up

Jump backwards to the ledge

Turn right and wall run when the blobs go up and down in different directions from the middle.

Wall run NOW!

Press red by the ring and jump to a narrow beam in front of a turning Mill wheel.

Past the ring jump off to the protruding narrow beam

When the wheel stops turning for a few seconds run up and jump backwards to the higher beam.

Jump up to the wheel and backwards to the beam

Walk on the protruding beam and jump to the beam protruding from the opposite ledge.

Jump between the protruding beams

Another puzzle here has three gears that need to be aligned with the Power Plates behind them. There are two cranks.

Elika: This one’s a bit mote complicated, you need to –
Prince: Move the cranks to move the gears? Yeah, I figured.
Elika:  Just be patient. Patience brings rewards.
Prince: So does walking into a Harem covered in Chocolate.
[NOTE: Wasn’t “Chocolatl” known since the 16th Century or did the Prince arrive at Tenochtitlán long before the Spanish Conquistadores ever did?]
Really, they had to make it this complicated?
Elika: We have to look at where each gear is, then balance the number of times they all turn using the other crank. It’s not that bad. I think the right crank turns the gears, the one on the left controls the number of times the gears turn.
Prince: Just imagine this was a Temple... you need to get through the door... what would you do?
Elika: You’re thinking of gold?
Prince: Actually I was thinking of Altar Girls, but gold’s a good motivation too... I mean this is the same as the floor we did before, but I’ve got to line all three gears up. Have you seen outside this Mill? I bet you can see across the whole City from the top. But all the Millers see are these walls and bags and bags of grain.
Elika: And they know they’re doing something that helps people. I takes patience, just like this... We’ve just got to get the gears set up in the right place so one turn will line them all up.

These instructions don’t tell you much either unless the fact that this puzzle is much more complicated and there are a trillion of combinations of which some may do the job. When it comes to the end it’s all trial and error and the clues are worthless. But here is a fast solution inspired by the three panels on top. The first somehow says “turn left gear clockwise through 90 degrees”. Consider it a deviant first clue, be naughty and turn the left crank counter-clockwise (just a guess to begin the sequence):

Left crank: counter-clockwise

Then the second panel says “turn middle gear clockwise through a half-turn”. If you believe this one, be my guest and turn the right crank clockwise twice.

Right crank: clockwise (half-turn)

So far you seem on the right way because Elika starts pushing the Prince to go on:
Let’s go, we have to get to the top. We should keep going. I can’t see the Hunter anywhere. If we need to solve this we need to go on.

The left panel says “turn left gear clockwise”. Head to the left crank:

Left crank: clockwise

Now the left panel has turned blank, go give the left crank another clockwise shot:

Left crank: clockwise again

Now the left panel turned into a clockwise half-turn. The middle panel has turned blank and the right panel indicates a clockwise rotation through 90 degrees. Go to the right crank for a clockwise rotation of the right gear:

Right crank: clockwise

The middle panel gets blank and the right panel still says “rotate right gear clockwise”:

Right crank: clockwise

Believe it or not, but my intuitive guessing proved correct: all three gears are aligned... !

Jump up to the left Power Plate and lift off four times in a row from all the Power Plates in this room.

Lift off from the left Power Plate to the right Plate

From the right Plate to the middle Plate

There is a fourth Power Plate in this room that is a standalone. When you get launched from the middle Plate you’ll catapult to this fourth Plate.

From the middle Plate to the standalone Plate

Fling from here to a room full of black goo.

From the standalone Plate to the goo room

Go left into the outside and wall run past two blobs and a ring to the opposite ledge.

Wall run to the next ledge

Pull up, turn left and jump to the higher ledge. Pull up.

Jump over the gap to the higher ledge

Follow left to the corner and look up at the wall’s corner with two rings and tow blobs constantly passing between left and right.

Look up at the corner

When the blob between the rings is passing in the middle you can jump up to the first ring. This is the correct timing to climb to the second ring too.

Jump up to the first ring NOW

Immediately press red to vault up to the second ring

You can just hang from the ring for a short while. Press red when you see the second blob going away from the middle and vault up to the roof (that should be timed well).

Vault up to the roof avoiding the second blob

Walk on the protruding beam and jump into the arena for a next encounter with The Hunter.

Jump into the arena from the end of the protruding beam

Meet The Hunter! Your battle is still the same as the previous one. Often he turns blue so you can only hit him with your blue attacks, sometimes he sprawls the screen full of black ink and you must block until it gets clear again, and for the rest... use your combos with Elika.

Some details of the combat

When The Hunter is defeated he will jump over a wall and disappear.

Go for the coup de grâce

The Hunter has gotten grim

He flees away

Look at the partition in the wall between the arena and the Fertile Ground. Jump up past the ring to the dividing edge.

The opening to the Fertile Ground

Use the ring to jump up to the opening

Jump down to the Fertile Ground.

Jump to the Fertile Ground

Down there, let the healing start. Be witness of one the Greatest Miracles in the Prince of Persia Games:

Elika emerges with the blue beam of light

Pres yellow repeatedly while Elika and the beam become one and let them heal the Fertile Ground and the whole Land of Windmills from the wretched Corruption:

The entire Land is being healed!

The Prince helps the exhausted Elika back on her feet:
See, you don’t always have to wait for things. You have to make them happen.
Elika: Is that so?
Prince: I look around you, we could die in the next five minutes. Then where would waiting have got you? Ha, I’d rather die trying than waiting.
Elika: Maybe you’re right... if you want something... if you really want something, you shouldn’t wait.

Yeah? So... what are we waiting for?

Get an Autosave instead of...

Elika: The Black Gate has opened.
Prince: Is that a good thing?
Elika: We can enter the Corrupted Sanctuary.
Prince: And once we heal the Fertile Ground there?
Elika: There is no Fertile Ground... the essence of that place will rest inside the Corrupted.
Prince: And they’re just going to let us take it? Hah... Much more of this I’m going to have to stop and sharpen this sword. Where’s this Black Gate?
Elika: At the top of this Region.
Prince: So the Black Gate is open just like that?
Elika: It can open when we get there.
Prince: By "the Black Gate is open" you meant... ?
Elika: It will be open when we go there. Ahriman can no longer take the Energy from the Fertile Grounds here. The Gate will open.

I hope that smell isn’t me... or you.

With these final words of the Prince you are ready to catch the Light Seeds in the next Sublevel:
